After I finished highschool I spent two years working as A kaiawhina (teacher aide) . At Nga mokopuna O te matai kohanga reo . I had this one tamaiti (child) . She was takiwatanga (autistic) . She was non verbal, building a connection with her really softened my heart . During that period of time as her kaiako both she and I grew .Through her I developed a sense of understanding, empathy and generosity . With A tamaiti who couldn't talk, communication was very limited . So I would help cater to needs anywhere from helping her understand to follow simple instructions to toilet training .
