After I finished highschool I spent two years working as A kaiawhina (teacher aide) . At Nga mokopuna O te matai kohanga reo . I had this one tamaiti (child) . She was takiwatanga (autistic) . She was non verbal, building a connection with her really softened my heart . During that period of time as her kaiako both she and I grew .Through her I developed a sense of understanding,empathy and generosity . With A tamaiti who couldn't talk, communication was very limited . So I would help cater to needs anywhere from helping her understand to follow simple instructions to toilet training .

• Helping our children learn and use te reo maori . Helping our children understand the importance of belonging and the significance of te ao maori .

• Teaching our children the awareness of our enviroment and the resources within it . preserving and protecting papatuanuku.
• assisting with personal care such as eating or toileting .
• Following the te whariki a te kohanga reo .
• Embracing te tiriti o waitangi
• sharing with our children the importance of unity to strengthen relationships and form connections with others .
