A reliable track maintainer with an experienced mindset, also willing to learn and expand his areas of knowledge. Highly motivated staff member who works efficiently, effectively, but most importantly, safely, ensuring himself and his colleagues around him are prioritized and working in a safe and healthy environment.
I began as a trainee track worker within the Westport Maintenance Crew in August of 2023, where I work between Ngakawau and Reefton on the SNL (Stillwater-Ngakawau line).
This role involves day-to-day duties such as the operation of power and hand tools, basic radio procedures, track renewal (installing new closures, sleepers, and formation replacement) under direct supervision. During the current time since I began in this role, I have completed my OJT (On-the-Job Training) to advance to the Track Maintainer level. This involves acquiring my full Class Two driver's license, competencies to operate a hi-rail vehicle, taking out protection via track warrant, and managing a worksite safely and effectively on my own. Being based in Westport has its perks and disadvantages. Working trackside along the Buller Gorge has a beautiful view, but it comes with a lot of maintenance and issues, such as trees often obstructing the rail corridor, drainage and formation issues, and its limitations for vehicle access. Having these issues is vital when undergoing work or inspections in the area, where anything could happen at any point, and things may not be as noticeable. This has taught me to be more aware and to look outside the box for these said issues.
