  • I was a contractor for Fairy Godmothers from 2011 till 2017, then for Apples (which was rebranded to Kia Ora Kids Homebased Childcare) and then moved to Dream Educator. I looked after children between 0-5 years in my own home. Being funded and audited by the Ministry of Education (MOE), we follow the principles of Te Whaariki and care for upto 4 children each day of different ages. I tried to set up an interesting, educational, safe and fun learning environment. A number of the children I had in my care over the years had special needs mainly ADHD and Autism. I really enjoy doing lots of arts and craft activities as well as science experiments, messy play and being in the outdoors with the kids.

  • I was employed by Plunket to run two different playgroups in the morning on the North Shore. I organize, set up and run the playgroup which provides lots of indoor and outdoor toys, a music session and craft and sensory play activities. The playgroup has to follow principles reflecting the Te Whaariki (the early childhood curriculum) as it is funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE).

  • Spectrum Care supports people with an intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder. I was part of the community support team and was employed as a part-time behavior therapist. My role involved visiting clients (children on either the autism spectrum or have an intellectual disability) that have been referred from the community. I would visit the families and the community houses run by Spectrum Care to assess any behavior challenges shown by the client and in turn write up and implement a behaviour support plan with follow up support as needed.

  • I was employed as a mental health community support worker by Connect. My role involved visiting clients who have a mental illness and support them according to their individual needs without focusing too much on their diagnosis. Some of my key responsibilities with clients included; being a listening ear and social support, helping them with their housing needs, benefits, assisting with their community integration by working with organizations such as WINZ, housing NZ, other support groups and community organisations. Additionally, the role involved a lot of educating as well as providing resources for the client. Furthermore, I joined clients at clinical meetings with psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses or therapists to function as an advocate and support for the client as well as to discuss common goals with clinical staff. I also took clients to any other necessary appointments or outings to allow them to achieve their individual goals and increase their independence and integration in the community.

This position involved that I facilitate the boy for three hours three times per week in the activities carried out in the crèche. The main focus was on working towards improvements in the boy’s language and social developments and to encourage him to participate in the activities carried out in the crèche. I was part of a multidisciplinary team and was guided by an early childhood teacher, a speech-language therapist and a clinical psychologist.

I was supervised by the Educational Coordinator and the CEO of YHT and worked in conjunction with the residential staff of YHT.

  • I worked full-time as a teacher aid at Wilson Home School which caters for children with multiple disabilities such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, learning and behaviour difficulties and neurological conditions. I worked in a classroom with children between the ages of two to ten years old who had a variety of disabilities, most commonly cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism. My task was to work one-on-one with each child according to his or her individual educational and developmental plan. This included the facilitation in the child’s toilet training, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech-language therapy corresponding to the goals set out by each specific therapist and by the special needs classroom teacher.

I enjoy being outdoors and active (tennis, swimming, zumba) as well as doing creative things (drawing, painting, flax weaving, crafts and photography) and enjoy the beach, nature, gardening, reading, cross-words, music and playing the guitar.

I have been involved with Playcentre for one year and completed course one and two. Furthermore, I did some volunteer work for the Waitemata Parents Centre for a year. In the past I have worked once a week for four months with adults with various physical and intellectual disabilities, and I have done some volunteer work for the Stroke Foundation. Furthermore, I have been involved with the NZ Deaf Society for some time and also completed a course in NZ Sign Language and worked as a Café Assistant for over four years. Also, I was a girl guide leader for several years in my youth.
