I am a current student at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), pursuing a Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) with a major in Perioperative Practice. I am in my third year, second semester, doing my final paper. Throughout my studies, I have gained substantial experience during placements across various hospitals, accumulating almost 3000 hours. Concurrently, I am employed as a Supervisor at Woolworths Manukau. Leveraging the skills and knowledge acquired from both my academic placements and current work experience, I am eager to gain further valuable experiences and apply my competencies to contribute to your hospital.
I am currently still doing this placement my last day is on 11th Sep. My aim during this placement is to be confident when attending trauma and emergency surgery. So far, i have done some burn cases, Maxfax, ortho, paeds, obstetrics (cata 1), general and regional anaesthesia. Managing emergency airway recovery techniques, understanding common airway management strategies. Understanding my role and responsibilities as an anaesthetic technician. communicating with the anaesthetist to preplan and prepare for surgeries. practicing intubation (ETT/ LMA) and IV cannulation. Along, looking forward to do level 2 machine checks.
Additionally, I recently volunteered as an interpreter for two patients. One patient spoke Fiji Hindi, which is my mother tongue, and the other spoke Punjabi. This experience has encouraged me to pursue further studies in interpretation upon completion of my current degree. Developing professional skills as an interpreter will enable me to support patients with such language barriers in the future, enhancing care delivery.
While on my placement in PACU at Auckland City hospital, i was trained on post operative patient treatments. Monitoring patients respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological physiology conditions and appropriate responses to respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies. assisted with 12 lead ECG. Also assisted with patient airway post anaesthesia and sedative procedures. Doing ABCDE upon patient arrival and ISBAR handover. i was also allowed to administer medicines like morphine and fentanyl.
Along, with this i was also required to do a ICU shift, where i got involved in red bell (performing chest compressions) and debriefing with another patients family.
During my placement at Whangarei Hospital, i gained experiences with Paediatrics, shared airway (ENT, Dentals), cardioversions, assisting with blocks and PICC lines. Participating in this activities enhanced my understanding of different population groups.
