To conclude I am committed to pursuing a career in aquaculture. My promotion to farm technician gave me an excellent insight to the more detailed workings of the farms and the behavior of oysters. And the recent opportunity to spend a few months working in the nursery has given me knowledge of almost the whole life cycle of the oyster but there is always more to learn. I hope to continue that learning with your team at Cawthron.
Assisting the team with the day to day operations of the nursery. Jobs included: grading oysters from less than 2mm to 8+, pond maintenance, washing down raceways, packing out spat for the farms, monitoring the ponds and recording data.
This was a new position opened on the farm at Whangaroa, my role was to ensure that oysters were being stocked at the correct densities, record and be able to trace stock movements in and out of the farm and within the farm, collect data on growth rates and mortality rates and set up early warning systems for potential mortality events.
As this was a new role everything was started from scratch. I built and continually updated and improved several data collection and analysis spreadsheets to track farm performance. Data i collected was used by the national farm manager to keep track of where stock had come from, how much and what sizes.
Using CAD drawings and parts produced inhouse i assembled and welded farm machinery
I became a skilled and confident MIG welder and my ability to read drawings greatly improved during my time there.
Working on the Oyster barges using the new Flip Farm system.
Harvesting for grading or sale.
Installing new infrastrucure for the farm and pulling out old farm.
Working in the Coromandel is where i found my love for Aquaculture.
