Chris Honiss

Summary

My mission is to establish and refine my career as a primary school teacher by contributing and adding value to the kids in my community. My goal is to use my wisdom to guide my learners from where they are to where they need to be within the academic year To achieve this ends I intend to continue exploring new teaching approaches, strengthen my pedagogy and take on new roles that offer opportunities to cultivate my practice.

Student Teacher

06.2023 - 09.2023

During my final placement I was responsible for leading a year three classroom within level two of the NZC. I took charge within the akomanga extending/fast-tracking lower literacy and mathematical groups to level them up with their peers. As a student teacher I:

  • Demonstrated the professional attributes and ethical conduct required of teachers within the profession.
  • Established and maintained quality professional relationships with teaching colleagues, tamariki and whānau whilst effectively maintaining my leadership.
  • Provided evidence of my developing pedagogical practice which contributed to children’s learning whilst developing my practice.
  • Supplied evidence of a range of planning and assessment techniques to support effective teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated the ability to manage student learning effectively in classrooms through group work and full class teaching.
  • Reflect critically on my own practice working together with students to identify their strengths, weaknesses and next steps for learning.
  • During my final placement I effectively reversed roles with the teacher experiencing what it means to be responsible for tamariki
  • Promoted positive and productive learning environment to increase engagement and rapport with students and teachers.

During my second year placement I was responsible for teaching and learning at level three of the NZC. I worked together with teaching staff to teach a year five and six composite classroom under supervision of my mentor teacher:

  • Facilitating small group activities and one-on-one instruction to meet individual student needs and increase engagment.
  • Assisted with management of classroom rules, procedures and expectations inline with classroom code of conduct.
  • Became familiar with school policies and proceedures concerning daily schedules, attendance, planning, behaviour, permanent records, report writing, classroom management and testing programs.
  • Monitored student progression shifting classroom achievement.
  • Prepared, planned & presented classroom material guiding students from where they are to where they need to be within the NZC.
  • Participated and contributed to teacher development conferences.

01.2021 - 12.2021

My first year placement I was responsible for teaching and learning in a year eight classroom where I supported twenty-eight year eight students working within level four of the NZC t. It required that I:

  • Work together with my mentor teacher to learn about the teaching standards as I prepared, assessed and reflected on students' work and updated cumulative records.
  • Planned and prepared lessons whilst promoting a positive, productive learning environment as I worked collaboratively within the syndicate to increase engagement and rapport with students and teachers.
  • Provide instructional support through enrichment and extension endeavours whilst cultivating relationships with students and their teachers.
  • Observe, cooperate and teach a range of different subjects and year levels whilst utilising various teaching techniques and strategies to engage students in learning.
  • Work with groups of students of varying abilities in mathematics and literacy looking to extend their abilities.
  • Completed student progress reports mid-term to notify students and parents of strengths and areas of improvement.
  • Helped prepared mid year progress reports and participated in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Addressed student needs with teacher aides/support staff.
