I am currently a third-year medical student at Otago University with a strong interest in pursuing a career in ophthalmology. I have gained valuable research experience that has strengthened my skills and passion for the field, including conducting a 4000-word independent research project, chairing the Science Issue Exploration Club, where the club collectively debates current scientific issues and reviews research papers and journals, and attending the London International Youth Science Forum. These experiences have refined my data analysis, critical thinking, and academic writing skills, which I am eager to apply to ophthalmology research.
Another recent research experience I engaged in involved writing a scientific report on Marfan syndrome as part of an assignment on specific genetic disorders. In this report, I explored the ocular manifestations of the disorder, particularly ectopia lentis, and critically evaluated current research papers. I was awarded an Achievement with Excellence for this work.
Through my studies in population health and evidence-based practice during the first two years of university, I have developed knowledge in critical appraisal, meta-analysis, and systematic reviews, which will allow me to contribute to rigorous, evidence-based research in the field of ophthalmology.
In addition to my academic background, I enjoy playing sports (golf, squash, fitness), volunteering (community and Christian outreach), and engaging in cultural exploration, which have fostered qualities such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience—traits I believe are essential for success in both clinical practice and research.
During the semester, I am available to assist and work on weekdays from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Thursday after 4:00 PM, Friday from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM, and on weekends—Saturday after 2:00 PM and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
