Throughout my time in the NZDF i conducted numerous roles as an ammunition technician. Some of the highlights of these roles are listed as follows:
Deployment to Iraq, Operation Manawa 8 (Oct 2018 - May 2019)
- As the sole ammunition technician for our ANZAC task group i was responsible for the safe storage, issue, and transportation of ammunition and explosives for Australia and New Zealand. Alongside this I was responsible for providing relevant technical advice to my peers and leadership where necessary.
- I was responsible for overseeing the safe usage of high explosives weaponry such as RPG's, automatic and mortar ammunition.
- I also provided storage and technical advice to a number of other nations such as, but not limited to, the United Kingdom, United States, Singapore, Germany and the Czech Republic.
Conventional munitions disposal
- A major part of the job was the safe disposal of ammunition. I frequently was tasked with destroying ammunition which had failed to function as designed. This always involved the correct and safe use of explosives, calculating correct safety distances to ensure the surrounding areas and populations are safe, as well as having the technical knowledge to identify ammunition which may have aged and degraded over time.
Bulk demolitions
- I have experience in writing instructions and conducting the safe disposal of large quantities of ammunition no longer fit for service, quantities of these demolitions ranged anywhere from 10kg up to 2.5 tonne.
Storage and maintenance of ammunition of the NZDF ammunition stock
- I have experience in licencing buildings for the safe storage of ammunition, inspecting ammunition to ensure it is fit for service, and conducting maintenance on relevant equipment for all of the NZDF's stockpile of ammunition.
Recruit Instructor
The final two years of my Army career were spent as an instructor the The Army Depot Waiouru, where we take army recruits through a 16 week basic training course and give them the basic standard of training in order to begin their life as a soldier.
This included training in areas such as:
- Safe usage of weapons (E.g, rifle, machine gun, grenade)
- Bushcraft
- Map reading and navigation
- First aid
- Regimental discipline such as drill/marching
- Highly physically motivated
- Tactical awareness and decision making in high stress environments
- Working for very extended periods of time, up to weeks/months
