I have been a boat owner and operator for 10 years and extensive experience with operating trailer boats and understanding New Zealand fisheries law.
28 years of fishing experience alongside friends who are marine biologists and marine scientists has highlighted the effects of over fishing and its effects on the entire ecosystem for me. Experiencing the impacts first hand has ignited a passion in me to do what I can to preserve our kaimoana, the ocean and our environment for future generations.
Growing up in Leigh I was drawn to surfing. The local surf community are a bunch of like minded ocean loving individuals whom are passionate about preserving the clean healthy ocean we were lucky enough to grow up with. Spending so much time in and around the ocean has made it very special place worth caring for.

I am equipped with cultural awareness and the ability to read situations and people effectively. My approachability, communication skills, transparency and integrity allow me to be an effective leader encouraging collaboration and trust. I am calm, rational and able to adapt and make quick decisions enabling me to thrive in dynamic environments. I am committed to personal growth and ongoing learning. I possess a willingness to learn from those around me and contribute to team goals articulately.
While surfing I encountered a challenging situation where a fellow surfer had dislocated his hip out in the water and I was the first on the scene. I was able to remain calm and act quickly to ensure he didn't drown as he was completely immobilised. After quickly assessing the situation I was able to effectively communicate with him, offering reassurance, enabling me to navigate him through tricky ocean terrain with challenging conditions and multiple hazards to get him to safety before calling for paramedics and first responders. This incident demonstrates my ability to prioritise safety in a high pressure situation, communicate clearly and effectively, quickly assess a situation and act accordingly. This also reflects my physical capabilities in the water.
During my time as a senior electrician I have spent numerous days assisting and training apprentices. Through my avid people skills and ability to build a rapport with others I have been able to create a safe and effective learning space for those in training and maintain fantastic work relationships. I prepare and demonstrate effectively, keeping health and safety paramount, allowing space for those learning to practice new skills until they have mastered them and keep our work relationships light and fun to ensure our work environment remains healthy for us all. As a result I have successfully trained several apprentices to being fully qualified and remained in positive work relationships and friendships with them all.
As a store manager at Platypus Shoes I was tasked with developing systems and procedures that would improve team culture and staff satisfaction. Through collaborative and reciprocal relationship building and incentive based reward systems. People wanted to be there because it became a fun place to be with work life balance and quality relationships.
Through a lifetime of fishing and being on the water I have developed extensive knowledge of marine species and chart plotting. I grew up fishing off the rocks and have learnt about how we need to interact with rocky shore environments to ensure these remain healthy. I have since gone on to spend countless hours out on the Hauraki Gulf, enjoying fishing, snorkelling, gathering kaimoana and making sure I share my knowledge with my children so that they can go on to preserve and enjoy the moana for years to come. Through close friendships with marine biologists and marine scientist I have deepened my knowledge of the effects of the recreational overfishing of snapper and crayfish and how that is affecting the overpopulation of kina causing barren sea floors and the need for kelp restoration. This has ignited my passion for the importance of the fine balance that needs to be kept among all ocean species to ensure a healthy and vibrant sea life which in turn impacts the rest of earths environmental balances.
