Scientific Observer & Briefing Officer

Ministry Of Fisheries
  • As the scientific officer working on-board ocean going fishing vessels I was responsible for ensuring fisheries regulations were upheld. This required excellent observation and recording skills and a good knowledge of the practical implementation of fisheries regulations
  • I used my extensive communications skills in order to achieve high levels of compliance, often in situations where the crew of the vessels were reluctant to co-operate
  • Although the at-sea component of this role was autonomous, regular communication and reporting of vessel activities was maintained with my Briefing Officer and the Observer Programme. Observers were required to work their own timetable in conjunction with fishing activities aboard vessels and provide value data at the completion of each assignment
  • I was appointed into a training role supporting trainee observers to develop the necessary skills and competencies required for this role where suggested improvements in process lead to improved outcomes for the Ministry and stakeholders. This required being an effective member of a team where key responsibilities I completed were key to the outcomes of the group
  • The sensitive nature of information relating to commercial fisheries, vessel and crew activities required a high level of discretion and maintaining the absolute confidentiality of information

  • I was the first point of contact for Maori organisations, government departments, key stakeholders and the public wishing to deal with the runanga
  • Established and maintained key relationships within Ngai Tahu at a grass-roots and corporate level. These relationships remain healthy
  • Planned and organised runanga projects, made successful funding applications and supported the implementation of projects
  • Maintained communications with the wider whanau and also ensured communications with the Runanga Executive and the tribal corporate structure were strong and effective
  • Completed an additional contract to establish a runanga start-up business to provide training and education opportunities to Maori

Landscape Designer/Property Development

Landscaper
  • As the co-owner of a landscaping and private property development venture I was responsible for the planning, project management and completion of successful landscaping contracts and the sale of property
  • In this role I demonstrated my ability to plan, implement and complete projects to the high standards
  • Was a key member of the team awarded 2 silver medals in consecutive years at the prestigious Ellerslie flower show for my involvement with the Royal New Zealand Horticultural Trust
  • This entailed designing, pricing and tendering for both commercial and residential landscape projects. In completing these projects, I managed the costings, purchases and budgets
  • I regularly managed outside sub-contractors and liaised with Council, private property owners, and the public to ensure transparency and best results
  • I always delivered quality results to the satisfaction of my clients

Copywriter/ Translator

CDP Japan Round Table Associates
  • I was one of two Japanese/English speaking copywriters in a team tasked with the creation and development of global advertising and corporate image campaigns for Matsushita Electric, Panasonic, National, and Aiwa
  • Accurate communication of technical data and ideas to a wide range of different people from various nationalities ensuring they understood the concepts and the information they were given and assist them to interpret it for best results
  • Bicultural and bilingual communication required high levels of accuracy and an acute awareness not only of other people’s requirements and expectations but also their customs
