Implement and coordinate care of ICU patients aged newborn to 15years admitted for a complex range of illnesses over all specialties (common admissions include bronchiolitis, croup, seizures cardiac failure & sepsis). I have developed sound top to toe assessment skills, knowledge of pathologies and treatments over a diverse patient population.
Work in communication with the charge nurse to assist flow within the unit including setting up for admissions and ensuring discharges are completed on schedule. Whilst supporting nurses on the floor, assisting in patient emergencies and aiding break reliefs.
Work as the technical specialist trained to manage both the ECMO system including; blood pump, tubing, artificial oxygenation technical equipment & clinical needs of the patient on ECMO including; maintenance of normal acid base balance, oxygenation and ventilation ,anticoagulation and emergency procedures in partnership with unit intensivist and perfusion services.
Organisation of regular study days for 10-12 nurses who attend education sessions and scenarios. Post the sessions the aim is that the nurses who attend will be able to carry out more advanced respiratory skills within the unit. Further to this I teach oscillation on the level 3 & 4 update study days to ensure senior nurses are refreshed on knowledge and updated on practice changes.
Provided preceptorship to NETP, nurse observers and new starters within the unit in partnership with nurse educators ensuring safe practice is developed before practicing independently.
