Gail Ann Overton

I am a friendly, diligent and hard-working educator who has always worked towards being a good, professional facilitator whilst creating an interesting and up-to-date learning environment. I like to have a more holistic approach to teaching so that my students learn both in the classroom and on a personal growth level. I have a good rapport with my fellow educators, my students and their parents. I enjoy keeping up with the latest techniques in education as I believe that the latest technological solutions are what is needed in this fast-paced and dynamic world. I have a good understanding of the 2007 and present NZ school curriculum, both the NCEA and Cambridge syllabi as well as an in-depth understanding of learning principles and policies.

• I have taught the following subjects, namely: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, General Science and Biology. I have lectured in the following subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Geography and Educational Philosophies.
• My experience in the subjects of Mathematics and Science would be useful if I was to be a mentor to new teachers as this was the topic of my Masters in Education degree at the University of Port Elizabeth.
• Decisive leadership was evident as the HOD: Mathematics and Science at a tertiary level and the HOD: Physical Science and the HOD: Technology at secondary school level as well as the HOD: Science at Corelli School. I have been the manageress of a crèche that was part of a major hospital in my town.
• I am very proficient with computer systems that are used for educational purposes and taught computer classes at a tertiary level.
• I have acquired a comprehensive knowledge of management and regulatory systems that link universities as this was the topic of my research for my doctorate that I may continue.
• I have been involved in project management in a major environmental project called "The Safari Park". I did their minutes of meetings and I was elected to take charge of the "Science Centre".
• I was elected as the staff representative during the amalgamation of PE Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth and Algoa College of Education to become the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).
