At Christchurch Boys’ High School, I have had the privilege of holding many leadership roles. Over the last two years, I have contributed to my school (Christchurch Boys’ High School) in many ways. I have been involved in many leadership roles at school and on the sports field. In 2023, at Christchurch Boys’ High School, I was the vice-captain of the 2nd XI cricket team and the touring team of Sydney, where I was the captain of the Development XI, a team of Year 11 and 12s. I was a coach of the Under 14 Black rugby team and gained Merit Endorsement in NCEA Level 2 with Merit Endorsement in Level 2 Te Reo Māori. These leadership roles in 2023 helped me become a Monitor (Prefect) in 2024, with the portfolio of Head of Peer Support (Mentoring for Year 9s), and I am a Year 13 leader of Te Komiti Māori (Māori Committee). At CBHS, I am a 1st XI Cricket Team member, although I have been injured with a back injury, I have now returned to playing. I also coach the CBHS Year 9 Black rugby team and have been involved in selecting Year 9 cricket teams.
At CBHS, my responsibilities as Head of Peer Support are to help Year 9 students build relationships and connect, which can be challenging for a Year 9 at a school of 1400 students, where you may only know a few people. As the Year 13 leader of Te Komiti Māori, I attend meetings and discuss ways to promote and celebrate Te Reo at CBHS. This year, I have done the karakia at school assembly many times, and I have initiated allowing all Te Komiti Māori members to do the karakia at assembly, especially those in Years 9-12, as it will enable them to show their leadership and step outside their comfort zone. As a monitor, my job, as with the other 19 monitors, is to discuss ideas and initiate them into school.
In 2023, I suffered a significant back injury. This injury has affected me in the long term and my ability to play high-level sports. To keep myself involved in sports, I took up coaching in rugby, which has allowed me to improve my leadership skills. I plan weekly training and focus on developing the skills of the boys I coach. I enjoy coaching as it has allowed me to connect with the younger boys of my school and be a coach and a role model to them. My injury has helped me build up a lot of resilience, a value I uphold. This has made me motivated to return to sport, and I am now playing for the 1st XI after returning, something I am very proud of.
