Duncan's Canvas is a diverse business employing up to 12 staff and manufacturing everything from cow covers to shade sails. As such a vast product knowledge is required. I am responsible for payroll, gst, accounts, job scheduling, health and safety, HR, and generally keeping things going! Duncan's Canvas has won numerous national and international awards for canvas projects. It was my role to prepare in-depth written submissions, and co-ordinate all entry material, for the awards. I have also written all advertising and advertorial material for marketing Duncan's Canvas, and also prepared material for the website.
Hosted groups of Japanese students and gave them a kiwi farming experience. This included helping them prepare a kiwi meal, helping them feed pet lambs, hens and cattle and visiting other farms.
I have written feature articles for various magazines such as New Zealand Woman's Weekly. These have usually been human interest stories, house and garden stories, tourism publications and community newsletters.
I began reporting on industrial relations and health issues, spent time sole-charge in the Porirua branch office and then became Chief reporter. As chief reporter I managed a team of journalists and guided them in how to cover news stories and assisted with writing and editing them - all within very tight deadlines. I also wrote gardening and house and garden columns.
Prepared press releases, wrote and laid out Wellington City Council newsletters - public and staff. Coached staff in handling the media. Provided internal communication support, facilitating information flow among employees and departments.
I began at the Taranaki Herald newspaper as a cadet journalist. I quickly progressed to become the police reporter and when the newspaper closed down I moved to The Daily News and covered local government news.
