  • Check to see if there are any signs of further problems such as lung over-expansion injuries.
  • Provide oxygen to the patient to reduce the partial pressure of nitrogen and other gases in the respiratory system. This is the first stage in combating decompression sickness once basic first aid has been administered.
  • Educate patients about the processes in hyperbaric treatment and the reasons treatment might be necessary. They inform the patient about fire safety restrictions and things that they must do, such as ear-clearing techniques to reduce trauma risks and air-breathing breaks to lower the incidence of oxygen toxicity seizures (oxygen can be toxic at higher partial pressures).
  • Monitor the vital signs of the patient during the hyperbaric oxygen therapy. They also check the oxygen levels within the chamber to make sure they are maintained at the required level.
