Organised and dependable person who is passionate about contributing to the Scott Base team responsible for creating a welcome and organised environment for visiting Scientists, Antarctica New Zealand staff, Defence Force staff, dignitaries and other visitors such as those from McMurdo. Hubertien is successful at prioritising tasks and has a positive attitude. She has the willingness to take on added responsibilities to meet team goals and is greatly interested in people's well-being in the workplace by making them feel at home and listened to. She is passionate about organising events that are healthy for mind, body and also socially. She has the required first aid and driver's licence and started out her career as a cleaner.

She spends much of her time volunteering for various communities and is the President of the New Zealand Antarctic Society. She has finished her Master of Antarctic Studies with her thesis about recreation at Scott Base. She is very keen to contribute to the Scott Base community and aside of work, see recreation in action.

  • Accountable for the governance, strategic direction and implementation, financial planning and the daily financial and operational management integrity of this volunteer lead Society.
  • Chair of the Executive and the Management Committee, and member of several subcommittees.
  • Board membership of the Antarctic Heritage Trust, the trust that was formed by the NZAS for the conservation Ross Sea historic huts.
  • Designed and delivered a community outreach tour with the Antarctic Film Festival (films and speakers) that connected members and the public with Antarctica’s science, history, governance, climate realities and local speakers; we achieved 1,000+ attendees, strong regional media/social engagement, new memberships, repeat invitations, and showcased the Antarctic ecosystem (e.g., Antarctica NZ, AHT, Gateway Antarctica, IAC) with hands-on activations (ECW gear try-on). This is the catalyst for further local events. By invitation, seven Antarctic Film Festival events were held in Auckland and the New Zealand Maritime Museum as part of the Into Ocean and Ice exhibition.
  • Tangibly revived member enthusiasm to undertake new initiatives, such as engaging different Treaty Nations to contribute to our Antarctic magazine, attendance of conferences, to raise our profile and network to strengthen our messaging.
  • Engaged new young members/volunteers in the positions of Secretary, Membership Officer and digital marketing/newsletters.
