Isabella Soane

I am wanting to be involved with an engineering company, looking for a summer internship role for mechanical engineering as part of my degree. I love the workshop, fluid mechanics and being in a team.

• Problem Solving, I am a quick learner and am always ready to try a variety of ways to solve a problem. In my time as a Ski coach, working with young children always led to something unpredictable. When I had a kid ski down the slope without waiting and as a result I lost them. I used my knowledge of the mountain, resources and problem solving to find the kid and reunite them with my group., During the final stages of making our Warman robot, a mechanical element did not work and in turn our whole robot didn't work. With not much time left I used my problem solving skills to look at the problem differently and so we took a different approach of collecting the balls and my idea allowed us to complete the task.
• Quick Learning, When working as a farm hand over the summer I gained a lot of knowledge and skills I had never used before. From growing up in the city it was a steep learning curve to understand how each aspect of the farm worked and how best I could integrate my skills. By learning quickly I was able to help keep the farm running smoothly and to a high standard with the new skills I had such as driving a tractor., From my skill of quick learning I am not afraid to make small mistakes early on to prevent larger ones later. When I was working with children during my Mountain biking instructor role, I wasn't afraid to ask questions to those more experienced which allowed me to learn fast and be confident in my role as I gained responsibility.
• Teamwork, I am always happy to work with others in a team to achieve the best results. During the Warman design and build competition, I was placed in a team of four. By using my teamwork skills, we were able to communicate what we wanted to achieve and split the work appropriately to fit our goal. To be a good team player I took on a role doing the electronics and coding both of which no one in our team had any experience in. Instead of complaining, I worked with my team to bring all of our ideas together and we completed our task., Through my experiences in ski racing, despite competing in an individual sport, using my teamwork skills we fostered a good environment that had healthy levels of competition. When I was competing in ski racing, the team environment was often quite tense due to competitions. By using by teamwork skills, I was able to help in aiding the team to work together to use each others skills to better one another rather than compete, creating a nicer team environment
• Time Management, I am always aware of the time and planning that goes into everything I work on. When working on my submarine for my mid-year project I found that I didn't have much time to complete it. I sat down to plan out my days to ensure I was making the most of the time I had to complete the submarine and the report. By using my planning and time management skill I finished everything on time and to a high standard.
