Hey guys I'm Jack! I have spent the last couple years travelling the world as a Ski Instructor. Teaching thousands of diverse students, kids and adults, I gained great leadership and communication skills. During the summers, I worked as a fulltime door-to-door salesman which included daily sales training sessions and week-long road trips that I had to help organize and manage. After getting back from my second season in Japan, I wanted to branch out and start developing new skills. So, I applied to join the Dev Academy. Here I not only developed a strong understanding of Full Stack development but also found a huge new passion coding and problem solving. I'm confident that this, combined with the skills gained from my previous roles, will make a great fit into any team environment. I can't wait to continue developing my skills and get stuck into new exciting projects!
Dev Academy Aotearoa was an intensive coding bootcamp. Work hours were full-time in a hybrid working space.
During my time here, I worked on many different projects both solo and as part of a team. The most memorable project was Steller Share. This was a passion project built by a small team over the course of a week. I worked as the Scrum Facilitator, which involved managing group meetings, assigning work tickets, and overseeing overall group progression. Copy this link to see the project:

While at Dev Academy, I have developed a strong understanding of Full Stack Development using tools such as TypeScript, React.js, SQLite, and Vitest.
My love for winter and the outdoors led me to become a ski instructor. For a couple of years, I have traveled the world, chasing the snow and teaching thousands of students along the way. I have taught all ages ranging from little kids to seniors. As an Instructor, I had to quickly form trusting relationships with students, and not only help them improve, but also make sure they were having as much fun as possible. Being an instructor has really helped to develop my interpersonal and leadership skills.
When I couldn't find any snow to teach on, I would work as a full-time door-to-door salesman. I have knocked for multiple different charities, including the SPCA, Red Cross, and the IHC. Each morning started with a 2-hour training session, followed by 7 hours on turf, where I would apply the new skills I had learned. I would have to keep up with set KPIs and help organize two week-long road trips. During my time here, my communication skills really developed, and I found a lot more confidence in the way I hold and present myself in front of strangers.
Guitar - I have been playing guitar for over 15 years now. Guitar has always been a big passion of mine and is the best way for me to help keep my mind calm. No matter how stressed or upset something makes, I know that my guitar will always be there to comfort me.
Skiing - Skiing to me is the ultimate freedom, and being a Ski Instructor really made me dedicate a lot of time and energy into perfecting my craft. I have spent 1000s of hours practicing drills and the biggest take away I got was just how important the fundamentals are. This is something that I have taken into all other aspects of my life.
Skating - Skating is really hard, and it also really hurts. Skating has definitely helped to distill a sense of drive and persistence in me. It has taught me how to get back up time and time again after failure and injury. To never give up.
