  • Company Overview: Waitemata DHB/Health New Zealand
  • In Oct 2022, I accepted a secondment as Acting Team Manager of Adult Community Mental Health Service for West Auckland, Waitemata DHB (now Te Whatu Ora). This then led to a permanent position.
  • I agreed to take this on permanently as it provided me with an opportunity to further develop my skills in management and service development. My goal was to provide a gold standard service to adults (18-64 years of age) living in the West Auckland region by upskilling, leading and providing support to our staff as well as implementing new processes that would allow them to work more efficiently and safely. Services provided include a recovery service, an acute mental health service and a primary care liaison service. I was also part of setting up a new specialist rehabilitation service and was fully involved in the planning and implementation.
  • As well as being the manager for these teams, I am also responsible for overseeing doctors, psychologists and administrative staff. I am currently managing 90-100 staff members, with support from three coordinators and a nurse specialist.
  • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead, manage and develop a team of 90-100 nurses, doctors, psychologist, social workers, occupational therapists and admin staff with the aim of providing gold standard mental health care to a group of vulnerable clients.

  • My main responsibilities in this role was to coordinate effective care and service delivery to whaiora as well as acting as a clinical resource to the team offering consultation advice/recommendations, mentoring and facilitating best clinical practice and caseload management across the integrated care team. Daily, I would allocate staff tasks, provide effective leadership, ensure effective clinical risk management is adhered and implemented to, as well as ensuring staff work to the top of their scope. This was a senior nursing leadership role, which allowed me to widen my management knowledge and skills.

Mental Health Crisis Nurse/Coordinator

  • Provide acute assessment and a comprehensive range of therapeutic treatments in the urgent response team and planned acute care team
  • Provide support in times of crisis as well as emergency mental health assessment in the home and in the Emergency Department/Police station

  • This was a new service that was being set up by police Scotland and GG&C NHS. I was recruited along with 10 other healthcare professional to develop and build this service.
  • The purpose of this service was to provide healthcare, treatment for addictions, mental health assessments and assessments on fitness to be in custody, fitness to plea, fitness to go to court and risk assessments for people who were in police custody.
  • As part of this role I completed my Nurse Prescribing which allowed me to prescribe medications to this client group using patient guide directives.
