Precious are children, who deserve to be respected and loved. A core value of mine is being socially and culturally responsive and sensitive towards children and their families/whānau. I believe children are unique individuals and honour the essence of who they are. I treasure their identities and evolving personalities and appreciate the distinctive characteristics that make them special. I also respect their creative expressions, opinions and intentions both spoken and unspoken. Children are not empty vessels and 'education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire' (Robins, 2012, p.41). I value the influential role of adults in children's teaching and learning and see interaction, engagement and total involvement in a child's world as crucial to their holistic development. Parents are children's first teachers but not their only teachers and my role as an early childhood educator is to work together in partnership with parents/whānau for the best interest of their child. As an early childhood educator, I aspire to be a reflective practitioner, open and honest with teaching colleagues, parents/whānau and children. It is important to me to always be evaluating and questioning my professional knowledge and pedagogy and as a lifelong learner and researcher, I need to model this curiosity and thirst for knowledge with children. I hope to be a sensitive and conscious educator, fostering strong, authentic, trusting and open partnerships and relationships with all parties involved. I believe dance, drama, art and music are effective mediums for children to express themselves and advocate the importance of the arts in providing fun, meaningful and stimulating experiences for children. In particular I value children's creative expressions through dance and movement which is central to who I am and how I engage and interact with children. I believe children are the curriculum and all pedagogy and practice should originate from them. We, educators, parents and whānau have a responsibility to work together in partnership towards igniting and setting alight our children's passions, interests, attitudes, values and depositions which will hopefully sustain them throughout life.
