Message from Expedition Leader (Jenny) from World Challenge: Jazmin has recently spent three weeks on expedition in Vietnam with World Challenge, along with 13 other young females (Dec 2019). The team was accompanied by an Expedition Leader and a School Leader. World Challenge offer expeditions that aim to be student led, where challengers will work both as part of the team and as a leader. The experience provides the opportunity for individuals to experience a different culture, develop new skills, be challenged, and recognise potential as well as having a great adventure along the way. They will take charge of budgeting, organizing travel, accommodation and so forth. The itinerary saw the team travel from the North to South of Vietnam. Challengers entered the wilderness of Mai Chau for 3 days, initially which offered opportunities to meet with minority groups of individuals who lived in the rural villages as well as trekking through its beautiful landscape. This was before traveling South visiting key sites of cultural and natural significance along the way, and taking part in various activities such as snorkeling, lantern making and cooking lessons as part of their rest and relaxation. The team then began their community engagement phase in the Mekong Delta. In this instance the team made a significant contribution to building a home for a family in a deprived community. The team engaged in various manual tasks, working really hard in humid conditions. They also had the opportunity to get to know members of the local community, learn about their culture and way of life., Jazmin has a wonderfully caring nature, with a clear love for animals. She showed empathy toward others, having some lovely interactions with some children she met during the expedition. While Jazmin was leader, she showed her ability to organize the team, delegate effectively and do some positive decision making. Jazmin challenged herself during the expedition, and reaped the rewards as a result. During the community project phase Jazmin showed her strength and determination. She was not phased by getting stuck in to physically demanding tasks such as mixing cement, shoveling various materials and building. She showed a genuine wish to make a difference to the local community.
