Summary

Ko Joanne Young toku ingoa. I have been a Registered Social Worker in New Zealand for 22 years. I am Scottish and immigrated to New Zealand 25 years ago. I am currently working within the New Zealand Defence Force. I am currently working at Whenuapai Air Base as the Air Force Social Worker. I enjoy working with all Military Aviators and their Whanau/families. I also support all Civilian Staff and their Whanau/families. I enjoy working with Vulnerable Children, Vulnerable Adults 16-65 and Vulnerable Older Adults 65+. I enjoy working within a team and using a multi-disciplinary and community approach to my client’s health care outcomes and well-being. I am currently working within the Professional Resource Group (PRG) to develop Policies and Best Practice for Social Workers within NZDF. I am also working with NZSWRB Professional Conduct Committee to support competent and safe social work Practice. I really enjoy supporting individual Social Workers to feel inspired, and be excited about Social Work, and encourage Best Practice. I continue to value community service delivery, and enjoy working in partnership with community services and NZDF personnel.

Air Force Social Worker

  • I am currently working for the Air Force as the Social Worker at Whenuapai Air Base in Auckland
  • I support all Military and Civilian family/Whanau well-being
  • This is a specialised field and requires a senior social worker due to the complex nature of social work within NZDF
  • I use Te Whare Tapa Wha model of care as the basis for our health care model
  • I support the Taha Tinana (Physical health), Taha Wairua (Spiritual health), Taha Whanau (Family health) and Taha Hinengaro (Mental health) I work closely with our cultural support on Base and in the community for best health care outcomes

  • I also support family/whanau that are being deployed and/or working away from home

I am contracted to the NZSWRB to investigate and assess Social Workers competency to Practice. I work within the PCC and a panel of three, we investigate concerns raised regarding Social Workers Professional Practice, reported by, the Public or Peers. We consider evidence which will determine the ability and standards of a Social Worker and the complaint raised. We consider evidence against the standards of NZ Social Work Registration Boards 10 Core Competencies, Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics, to determine whether the Social Worker meets the Standard of Practice for Social Workers in New Zealand.

Projects

MM/DD/YY, Civilian of the year within NZDF, I was nominated for Civilian of the year within NZDF for my support through COVID. I received a NZDF medal for my Service to Military and Family/Whanau support, through COVID. MM/DD/YY, Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP), I was a VIP (Violence Intervention and Prevention) for Vulnerable Children, Vulnerable Adults and Vulnerable Older Adults in Te Whatu Ora. I worked within the wider Multi-Disciplinary Teams, supporting responsiveness to VC/VA/VOA. I had been a VIP member for a number of years, supporting staff awareness, prevention, and work force education regarding reporting tools. I worked very closely with the legal team, using the PPPR Act and Crimes Act for best client outcomes. I provided expert knowledge and support to staff with complex cases, highlighting Te Whatu Ora Policy and Processes and Procedure for VC/VA/VOA and best care outcomes. MM/DD/YY, Professional Supervisor within Te Whatu Ora, I have enjoyed many years supporting staff with Professional Supervisor within Te Whatu Ora. I encourage staff members to discuss challenges they have in their own Clinical Practice. I supported staff by challenging their Practice knowledge and support self-reflection on Best Practice outcomes and guidelines reflecting on the NZSWRB 10 Core Competencies, Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics. I also challenged Clinical practitioners, to challenge their own values and beliefs, to further their own learning outcomes, issues or concerns working with colleagues/clients from diverse cultural groups. I trained new staff regarding Tikanaga within the Medical Model. MM/DD/YY, NZQA Assessor through Career force, I have trained as an NZQA Assessor through Career force, to support Locality Assistants within Te Whatu Ora to receive a recognized NZQA qualification. I have met with the Locality Assistant (Students) and supported their educational journey. I have met with students to discuss and support their learning, and mark assessment guides to qualify for a NZQA qualification in health care. I supported Health Care Assistance to increase their salary through a new frame work salary developed in Te Whatu Ora.
