Jonathan Miller

Alexandra,New Zealand

Summary

I’m looking for full-time employment in surveying from November 2025 onwards, after completing my Bachelor of Surveying degree at the University of Otago.

Hello, my name is Jonathan Miller and I'm from Alexandra, New Zealand. I am 21 and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Surveying at the University of Otago, where I am mid-way through my fourth year of study. Preceding this, I completed NCEA level 3 at Dunstan High School in Alexandra, Central Otago, where I have spent all my childhood. I have developed a strong passion for land surveying and have known for some time that this is the career path I wish to pursue. The combination of technical skills, problem-solving, and outdoor work excites me, and I am eager to continue learning and developing in this field. Through both my studies and practical work experience, I have developed a strong foundation in a range of surveying techniques and gained confidence using various survey equipment and industry-standard software. In addition to my studies, I am passionate about outdoor sports, particularly mountain biking and running. I have competed in various long-distance running events, such as The Luxmore Grunt, Mt Difficulty Ascent, and Ultratrail Australia. I also compete at a national level in enduro and cross-country mountain biking. These activities not only keep me fit and motivated but also teach me perseverance, goal-setting, and the ability to push through challenges, which I believe complements my work ethic in both academic and professional environments.

Work History

Paterson’s
Cromwell, New Zealand
  • Role: SURV499 work experience
  • During my summer and winter breaks have been working at Patersons in Cromwell as part of my SURV499 work experience. This role has given me the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of surveying tasks, including building and sewer setouts, drone surveys, engineering levelling, and general cadastral fieldwork. I've also contributed to office-based work such as drafting scheme plans, resource consent writing, and subdivision design using software such as 12d and BricsCAD. This experience has strengthened my practical surveying skills and given me a better understanding of how survey projects are delivered from start to finish. Working within a busy land development firm has helped me build confidence in my technical abilities and improved my communication and teamwork skills.

TL Survey Services
Dunedin, New Zealand
  • Role: Fieldwork experience
  • During my time at university, I have had fieldwork experience with Mark Geddes at TL Survey Services. This work included various different projects and survey applications such as locating boundaries, building setouts, GPS LT subdivision setouts, and topographic surveys. This job put into practice what I have learnt during my time studying at university. It gave me the chance to improve my technical skills and see first-hand how the concepts we studied work in the real world. Working on a variety of projects taught me how to handle different situations, while also improving my ability to communicate with others.

Panmure Orchards
Alexandra, New Zealand
01.2017 - 12.2025
  • Role: Dispatch Manager
  • During my summer breaks from high school and university, I worked at Panmure Orchards. I have worked here for 9 consecutive seasons, eventually building up to managing the dispatch of cherries and nectarines from the packhouse for the last five years. My responsibilities in this job included: Using the forklift to move heavy loads around the packhouse and to load/unload trucks. Keeping track of progress on daily dispatch as it was being assembled. Labelling all dispatched pallets correctly and determining what their destination would be. This job has taught me a lot about working in teams and working under pressure.
