Diesel Mechanic Apprentice

  • I am currently working as a diesel mechanic apprentice for a forestry company, and I have been here for almost two years now. My job includes going out to breakdowns, diagnosing and fixing the problems on site, regular maintenance and servicing of all the forestry gear, as well as maintenance and repairs on all the company's utes.
  • As part of my job, I have also gained a lot of experience in operating all the forestry gear, such as diggers, loaders, and bulldozers.
  • In this job, I have had to learn to work on my own a lot and do a lot of problem solving to get the machines running. As well as working alongside other mechanics on big jobs that require team work and good communication.

Mussel spat packer

  • Packing mussel spat has been a part-time job for me for about seven years now.
  • In this job, one of my roles has been collecting mussel spat (baby mussels), which is attached to seaweed and washing in on 90 Mile Beach. This involves driving a truck and a loader, and collecting it from in the water.
  • Another role of mine has been sorting and packing the spat into bags once it gets brought back to the yard.
  • During my time working here I have got my Class 2 full license, as well as getting my wheels, tracks and rollers endorsements
  • This is a very physical job as you are filling and stacking 10kg bags for long hours
