Senior Recruitment Consultant - Tam Leader Construction

  • Reporting to the Managing Directors of Key Skills, the role is responsible for the running of the construction desk at Key Skills Recruitment which is made up of roughly 150-200 candidate’s working week to week in on-hire roles on wages or as labour only contractors.
  • I am responsible for the interviewing and placing and wage and cost negotiation of skilled construction staff, carpenters, hammer hands, riggers, dog men, crane operators and apprentices.
  • It requires daily interaction with construction Site Managers from large commercial construction companies across the Wellington region.
  • Initially this role required a heavy focus on sales but in later years we have struggled to find capacity of candidates.
  • Our main focus is on account management and candidate retention.
  • I also oversee and guide a junior recruiter who looks after the labourer pool which makes up roughly 60 - 80 of the candidate’s working week to week across the same spread of clients.
  • A challenging role within a high-risk industry which requires strict health and safety compliance.
  • We ensure all candidates are thoroughly reference checked, have the correct qualifications and health and safety tickets.
  • We also ensure all candidates have completed competency registers and where required drug testing.

  • Company Overview: In 2016 I set up an app development business that provides cloud based data recording services to several polytechs around New Zealand.
  • The software allows trades apprentices to record their on the job practical experience in an app which is able to be accessed in the cloud by their assessors for sign off.
  • Initially this was built for carpentry apprentices but it has now been expanded into infrastructure, electrical, horticulture and hospitality.
  • I contracted out the development work and leaned in on my sales and account management experience to grow the business.
  • I believe I have also learnt a lot about project management through this as well as some understanding around budgeting, invoicing and marketing.
  • The Record of Work system is currently licensed to Otago Polytechnic, Weltec, Toi Ohomai, UCoL, Wintec, Eastern Institute of Technology and Unitec.
  • It has over 3000 apprentices using the system as well as around 100 assessors.
  • In 2018 we won an excellence award at the Microsoft Tertiary ICT conference in Christchurch.
  • Record of Work is currently run on the side of working at Key skills.
  • I am able to service clients needs remotely and it does not affect my day to day workload in recruitment.

  • Company Overview: An NGO funded by the Ministry of Health with the goal of reducing smoking rates and supporting people with best practice smoking cessation support.
  • My role was to set up a program focusing on reducing smoking in the workplace.
  • I developed and implemented the Quit@Work system which involved approaching large industrial employers in specific industries with high smoking rates among staff.
  • Working with the Quit Group’s research team we were able to provide data that showed the significant increase in productivity and wellness outcomes associated with reduced staff smoking rates.
  • Working with their health, safety and wellness teams we increased awareness and trained staff to deliver cessation advice and nicotine replacement therapy to employees.
  • In many cases large employers covered the costs of our time, travel and training provided.
  • The private/public partnership model was used when developing similar programs within the ministry.

  • In this role I worked my way up from being a junior temp desk recruiter looking after unskilled workers to looking after the construction desk including skilled workers and apprentices.
  • I also held the role of being the in house Site Safe trainer for Quin Workforce’s candidates and managed 20 apprentices.
  • Through my time here I saw Quin Workforce acquired but he Allied Workforce Group as well as seeing AWF go public on the NZX.
