Summary

Startup Swiss-army-knife engineer with 6.5 years in app development, geospatial data, embedded systems, and mechanical design. Architected the first-generation mapping database, built C++/Qt (QML) front-end menus now running on 40 + vessels, and designed rugged IP67 PCBs/enclosures. Comfortable picking up new tech on the fly and turning napkin sketches into manufacturable products. Ready to bring that build-anything energy to the next team.

Work History

Qt Software Engineer

Tocaro Blue
09.2023 - 12.2024
  • As one of four core developers (growing to ten), owned all QML menu & configuration pages plus key C++ data-plumbing for Proteus Hub. My work on the routing UI, self-serve setup wizard, and real-time nav-aid parsing formed a major slice of the IBEX-winning situational-awareness system now trialed on 40+ vessels.
  • Crafted a 25 widget QML library-Field-of-Awareness overlay, on-screen keyboard, ± dual counters, drop-downs, arrow steppers, three badge styles, compass-bias dial custom canvases for positioning the vessels radar and gps, re-used across 13 production screens and a 9-tab settings hub.
  • Built a unit-aware display manager (C++/Qt JSON ↔ QML) that formats vessel dimensions, offsets, and warning levels on the fly-eliminating a class of hard-to-debug unit mismatches.
  • Authored a 3k-LOC C++ 'Markers' engine that streams ENC nav-aid vector tiles in real-time classifies 70 IHO/IALA beacon & buoy types and pushes deltas to QML frontend.
  • Built a routing & ETA interface (RoutingLayout) that lets skippers set waypoints and see live arrival predictions tied to ML-based speed analytics.
  • Created a self-serve vessel-setup wizard (My Vessel, Onboard Hardware, Preferences, Tide Display) with lazy-loading ListModels-cutting first-boot configuration from 30+ min engineer-led calls to 10 min on-device self-service.
  • Implemented a badging & alert engine (GPS/radar loss, range/gain mis-set, data gaps) surfaced via numbered & caution badges plus screen pop-ups.
  • Ran weekly usability sea-trials on the test boat Radar Love and cross-plotter demos (Garmin, Simrad, Raymarine, Furuno).
  • Recognition: IBEX Innovation Award Winner 2024: judges praised Proteus Hub for 'distilling radar, sonar and AIS into clear situational awareness.'

Hardware Engineer

Tocaro Blue
06.2023 - 12.2024
  • Junior member of three-person hardware team for Proteus Hub. Took primary ownership of the build process for 50 rugged Early-Access units: managing connectors, soldering, waterproofing, and repeatable assembly workflows in startup-scale environment.
  • Owned the build line for 50 EAP units: organized the BOM, spec'd every IP67+ connector (30-min submersion pass), defined the O-ring stack, and hand-soldered sub-assemblies. Co-designed two enclosure revisions; Designed a connector PCB and carrier PCB with EAGLE for the LattePanda Linux computer; V2 adding an on-board thermistor and INA226 current-monitor circuit.
  • Wrote a Qase.io-driven hardware test plan (visual, BIOS, NMEA 2000, radar, Wi-Fi, LTE, Zoho-Assist reachability) and trained a teammate to run it, freeing senior engineers for new feature work.
  • Hot-swapped and rewired all major radar systems (Garmin, Simrad, Raymarine, Furuno) on the test boat to prove Proteus ML compatibility.

Geospatial Data Engineer

Tocaro Blue
01.2025 - 06.2025
  • Solo geospatial engineer behind the first-generation 'Radar Vision Maps' prototype. Taught myself PostGIS, GDAL, and Tippecanoe on the fly to ingest ~1 TB of ENC and OSM data into a unified PostGIS database and distill it into a 1.5 GB vector-tile set for ProteusCore edge devices.
  • Architected a PostgreSQL 17.4 / PostGIS geospatial pipeline that ingested 40 M+ features (~1 TB) from 30+ sources (S-57 ENCs, OSM extracts) into a unified database.
  • Authored Python multiprocessing + GDAL/Tippecanoe tooling to normalize schemas, flag duplicates, and export MBTiles compressed to 1.5 GB while keeping key layers (Beacons, Buoys, Lights, Shoreline Constructions, Bridges, Moorings, Piles).
  • Parallelized land-mask clipping/merging/differencing on a Linux server, cutting runtimes from 1-5 days to 2-30 hours (4-12× speed-ups).
  • Collaborated with hydrographic offices worldwide to scope a roadmap for global navigation coverage.

Product Engineer

Deft Dynamics (Moxie) - acquired by Tocaro Blue
10.2022 - 09.2023
  • Joined a six-person engineering startup and helped take multiple products from concept to working prototypes across hardware, software, and app layers. As one of four developers, contributed from early R&D through customer delivery and contract manufacturing, which led to acquisition by a key client.
  • Developed embedded C++ drivers for multiple ICs, including the INA228 current monitor and an ADS1115 ADC with thermistor circuit; validated output on ARCO's 48V, 400Ah test bench.
  • Designed an IP66/67 enclosure for ARCO Marine's 'Smart Regulator' using M12 NMEA 2000, RJ45, and high-/low-amp sealed connectors; the enclosure passed waterproof testing.
  • Created a custom marine wiring harness rated for harsh conditions, designed near UL1426 standards and capable of high-current draw; validated performance with no significant voltage drop under load.
  • Supported DFM reviews with a contract manufacturer to reduce assembly steps, lower component costs, and ensure sourcing for low-volume production; contributed to ARCO's first 1,000-unit run and helped create a bed-of-nails PCB tester for functional validation.
  • Prototyped a spring-loaded thermowell array to measure surface temperature gradients during robotic MIG welding for NASA EM32; designed stainless/brass assemblies with ceramic-filled cap nuts (rated to 1200C) to maintain consistent probe contact and fast thermal response.

Electrical Engineer

BLOX
06.2021 - 10.2022

• Modeled highly coordinated electrical systems and equipment using Revit for the manufacturing building process and facilitated model clash review meetings creating a built-in quality atmosphere
• Collaborated in the design, detail, and manufacturing support of the V3 Freestanding Emergency Department which is 60% more efficient than the code requires.
• Planned and designed the V3 circuit designed to fit in a modular format, reducing the electrical field scope to less than 20%
• Created electrical load calculations for 27 various room types in nurse and sub-nurse station modules of our clients Rehab Hospital
• Safety leader, responsible for leading weekly safety briefings to the floor assembly team moving the line operators towards a built-in safety culture
