Working with special needs children is a position that I find really satisfying. The bond you make with these students and watching them grow and develop through the years is extremely rewarding, and knowing you have helped them in some small way is such a great reward.
My current role as a Teacher Aide is with a very high needs student who is in a wheel chair. She is non verbal so all her daily care including feeding, toileting, medications are part of her daily learning. Her learning programme is planned by the classroom teacher and we adapt her programme to fit in with what the class is learning including sporting activities. I do also when required do my own planning and work sheets if needed. She has a PODD communication system along with an I pad and I do have a very basic understanding of sign language, this is something I would love to expand on. I was also taking her swimming and to the RDA weekly but this is currently on hold.
Along with this student I work approximately 2hrs per day with a student with hearing difficulties. I mainly work with her helping with her classroom subjects as her hearing while limited she is capable of understand most of the work she is given. I do extra reading and maths tasks with her.
Days my two students are away I work in other class rooms helping where ever I am needed.
I previously worked for Wairakei Primary School 6 years prior with a student with severe behaviour problems. I worked with him for a year until he left Primary School.
My main role was customer services. Other tasks included restocking shelves, promotions and displays. Customer enquiries, stock transfers and ordering. General shop cleaning and keeping a tidy safe work space. I also worked the Lotto counter.
I worked as a Teacher Aide with a number of different students. I had a small group of high learning needs student including ORS and a Dyslexic student. I worked alongside the teacher who planned the students daily learning but I also organised my own work sheets/ planning when required. I was also reader writer for the Dyslexic student for any exams.
I worked in the school library 2 afternoons per week or as required.
I love working with special needs children and form a bond with them I find this is such a satisfying career
I get on well with students and feel I am a good role model
