With a robust background in teaching and over a decade of experience working in statistics, I am deeply committed to providing evidence-based insights to stimulate understanding of concepts and methods to improve outcomes for diverse communities. My skills cater to a spectrum of topics, including psychology in general, neuropsychology, psychopathology, methodology, and advanced statistical methods, with a particular focus on people with mental illness, Māori, Pacific Peoples, and disadvantaged communities. I have demonstrated diligence across psychology and statistics, integrating these disciplines in research, academic, and applied settings. This unique combination of psychology and quantitative expertise enables me to contribute effectively to teaching and research at the crucial nexus between institutions and communities.
Through StatCoNZ Ltd, I am contracted to provide advanced statistical modelling of patients with chronic cough. This contract is a multinational collaboration across the UK and Europe, which requires consultation with leading experts in chronic cough. This topic is well under-researched globally, and my contribution is to lead the statistical modelling component on three projects: Baseline characteristics of people with chronic cough, a complex systems approach to understanding chronic cough, and multivariate analysis of predictors of cough severity. My contributions aim to frontier publications on descriptive, complex-systems, and empirical approaches to chronic cough.
Improving equitable outcomes for Māori though evidence based and data driven decisions is a key role for my work within the relationship between my company (StatCoNZ Ltd) and Te Taumata Hauora. I collect, analyse, and report on population data from large health and non-health databases to identify domains of health where people are most in need of support. This role focuses on advocating with Te Whatu Ora to change or improve services based on collated evidence of where Māori are systemically disadvantaged. Additionally, I contribute to refining the strategy and outputs generally with the Te Taumata Hauora. This work ensures Māori have progressively more equitable health outcomes in Te Tai Tokerau and Tāmaki Makaurau.
With over five years of consulting experience in my own company StatCoNZ Ltd, my expertise includes teaching, guest lectures, and research. I have guest lectured on advanced topics, including neuropsychology, psychological disorders, methodology, and statistics. Over the past five years, I have conducted statistical analyses and contributed to research initiatives for organisations with different requirements. Recently, my work spans teaching at universities (Auckland University of Technology, Massey University) and working both locally (Te Taumata Hauora o te Kahu o Taonui - Iwi Māori Partnership Board) and in multinational collaborations (European Respiratory Society), Government (Northland District Health Board) and Private Organisations (Waikare Community Development Trust), emphasising the intersection of scientific methodology, psychology, and statistics.
This StatCoNZ contract allowed me to solidify my teaching experience across a wide range of psychology topics and to elevate students' understanding and engagement at a leading university. During this time, I lectured for multiple years in neuropsychology (at Massey University), abnormal psychology, and advanced research methods. As a teaching assistant, I taught the PSYC603 and HEAL709 tutorials, equipping students with the knowledge and ability to understand the development and use of psychological assessments and research methods. I contributed to lecturing, teaching, marking, examinations, course content, one-on-one support with students, and alternative exam arrangements.
At the Northland District Health Board's Public and Population Health Service, Ngā Tai Ora, I was primarily responsible for developing statistical models to inform public health priorities aimed at mitigating health inequities, particularly among Māori communities. Recognised for my expertise, I contributed to implementing the Treaty of Waitangi training program – Engaging Effectively With Māori, was a key member of the COVID-19 Intelligence Team and was nominated by the CEO to represent the Northland Intersectoral Social Wellbeing Governance Working Group.
• Engaging Effectively with Māori: Assisted with the implementation of the Treaty of Waitangi and health equity training program.
• Northland Intersectoral Forum Member: Represented Northland Disctrict Health Board in regional social wellbeing initiatives.
• COVID-19 Intelligence Team, Northland: Provision of intelligence for the Northland region to mitigate a pandemic.
Working with Ngāti Hine Health Trust was a transformative experience that allowed me to bridge research and practice while supporting clients in reconnecting with their Māori values and beliefs. As one of only two residential kaupapa Māori-based substance use rehabilitation programs in Aotearoa New Zealand, this role provided a unique platform to contribute to the delivery and advancement of culturally grounded, whānau-centered services tailored to the needs of Māori communities.
