Summary

As an aspiring registered nurse of Aotearoa, I am driven to create a career and nursing philosophy for myself that surrounds person-centred care, culturally safety and creating an environment in the healthcare system where patients feel heard. I am an upbeat, fun empathetic person who can work hard under pressure but can still produce a high standard of care. I am able to maintain calmness and compassion for patients in order for the best possible outcome for them and the team I work with. I believe in the role of the nurse incontributing to the improvement of Aotearoa’s communities and individual’s health outcomes which with my personal and nursing skills, I believe I can provide to communities. I think I have grown more into this role as I have been able to experience and learn more which I am excited to put into practice as an aspiring registered nurse. I look forward to how I can further my nursing career through this opportunity and how I can benefit others around me.

Work History

Children's OR

Te Toka Tumai (ADHB) Auckland City Hospital
08.2023 - 10.2023
  • During this placement I began to understand the role and obligations of a theatre nurse. I was able to learn the patients journey of coming into the perioperative setting and see them move through pre-opto theatre to recovery. This allowed for me to understand the processes that occur but also how this journey may feel for the patient and whanau. I became familiar with certain instruments and equipment which helped navigate what I could do to help team members at times, especially in emergency scenarios. Through working in the theatres, I was able to understand the importance of working as a unit which really encouraged me to enjoy this placement

Medical Specialties - Ward 26b

Te, Tumai (ADHB) Auckland City Hospital
04.2023 - 05.2023

  • Within my first paediatric placement, I became more familiar with anatomy, physiology and specific complex medical conditions. Alongside these medical conditions and diagnoses, I learnt different treatments and procedures that evolved my own knowledge as well as the deteriorating signs of a patient with these diagnoses. I improved my drug calculations, was able to prepare and administrate IV medications, become familiar with the parameters of the sterile field, correctly format documentation such as a fluid balance chart and define my role in emergency situations. These accomplishments allowed myself to be confident working within my scope of practice and also be confident working with patients and their whanau.

School Health Clinic

Lynn Field College
03.2023 - 04.2023
  • From this community placement, I was able to learn how to connect with and approach youth when discussing health issues, identify key community issues youth are currently facing, and the importance of support for the LGBTQI+ community. Education around treatment and prevention in the community was a key aspect I took away from this school setting, including sexual health and sport induced concussions. At the end of the placement, I was able to upskill my body assessment skills, dressing techniques for various wounds and become educated on how I can support youth when providing care to them.

Dominion Road School

Central Auckland Specialist Schools
05.2022 - 06.2022
  • Working within a specialist school taught me a holistic approach to nursing. I was able to learn non-verbal techniques such as basic sign language and how to use visual supports. I also learnt the importance and advantages to using family centred care when supporting children with disabilities. Forming these skills allowed me to be able to problem solve when communication was limited, forcing me to think creatively when trying to ask questions or illustrate a task that needed to be done. I found these skills transferable to my practice as I used non-verbal, verbal, formal and non-formal techniques when trying to communicate with both adults and children.

Te Whetu Tawera

Te Toka Tumai (ADHB) Auckland City
04.2022 - 05.2022

  • Being able to work alongside patients and health professionals at Te Whetu Tawera taught me a lot about patient safety and safety of self. I was able to work alongside nurses that taught me the different stages of the Mental Health Act and how they affected service users lives. This encouraged me to build on therapeutic relationships and communication skills to try understand the perspectives of service users. I did this through undertaking and viewing mental state assessments, care planning, and engaging in daily activities with guidance from a preceptor that the service user enjoyed. By the end of this placement, I used the BATOMI documentation, built rapport with service users and was able to give a clear hand over to team members.

Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgical-Ward 74

Te Toka Tumai (ADHB) Auckland City Hospital
11.2021 - 11.2021

  • This placement, although short, introduced me to ward nursing in a hospital environment. I was able to learn the structure of wards at Te Toka Tumai Auckland hospital and how a shift is co-ordinated which has been vital when going to new wards for placements. With guidance from my preceptors, I learnt the medication administration procedures with help from Hippo guidelines, basic medication calculations, how to write a clinical note and basic ENT procedures such as tracheostomies. By learning these skills, I improved my time management through introducing a shift planner in order to structure my work, worked within my scope of practice and grew confident when administrating medications through different routes, e.g Subcutaneously. The placement did make me realise some gaps in my education which motivated me to improve parts of my knowledge.

Powley Villlage

Metlifecare Retirement Village
04.2021 - 05.2021
  • As this was my very first nursing placement, I gained basic nursing skills that are the basis of my nursing career. Skills such as performing vital signs, using equipment such as hoist’s and moving and handling techniques. While working with nurses, I was introduced to regular medications used and researched their mechanisms of action. Working in this setting, I gained a perspective of what patient centred care was and the role of the nurse while working with elderly and their whanau in order to build rapport. I was able to create interprofessional relationship with health care assistants, introducing me to the multidisciplinary setting of healthcare .
