Summary

My name is Laurice Steiner. I am a mother of seven and grandmother of seven children so far :). Most of my adult life has centered on my being a mother and being involved with their lives growing up. Having my children has bought me an array of experience with autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities and two child cancer journeys. Although these experiences were and can still be challenging, I would never change it for the world, as it is a part of the whole that makes them uniquely who they are. Having five of my children pass through the teenage years and graduate into adulthood I can reflect back on both conflicts and passages through that were successful for them, and what I could have done differently. Not always an easy stage of life for either parents or the teenagers themselves. Bringing more empathic listening to understand, and empathic responses into relationships with teenagers is what I have found the most helpful and have dramatically improved through studying these ways of relating in my current counselling course. I also have a much broader understanding of human development, and gained the skill of being very aware of my own mental processes whenever I am engaged with my last two children who are teenagers. My hope is that the skills I have learned could be transmitted into professional practice, to be able to support people ethically, professionally and effectively.
