Skills

  • Interpersonal skills: I build trusting relationships with patients by listening deeply, showing empathy, and tailoring my approach to their individual needs While caring for a young girl with a septic joint who was terrified of needles, I supported her by sitting with her, gently explaining each step in age-appropriate language, and using distraction techniques to ease her fear By being present, calm, and emotionally attuned, I helped her feel safer in a stressful situation this was an experience that reinforced the importance of therapeutic relationships and trust in nursing care
  • Team work: I thrive in fast-paced environments where clear communication and collaboration are essential During my acute placement on a medical ward, I was caring for two deteriorating patients, one with sepsis and the other receiving end-of-life care As their conditions worsened, I worked closely with the after-hours doctor and the Clinical Team Coordinator (CTC) to ensure both patients received timely, appropriate interventions By remaining calm under pressure, communicating changes clearly, and coordinating with the wider team, we were able to deliver safe, compassionate care during a critical period
  • Observational skills: I have a keen eye for recognizing subtle changes in a patient’s condition and responding appropriately During my acute placement, I was caring for a patient showing early signs of sepsis including and increase in heart rate, increasing respiratory rate, and altered mental status I escalated my concerns promptly to the nurse in charge and worked alongside the medical team to initiate early interventions This contributed to stabilizing the patient and highlighted the importance of vigilance, timely communication, and proactive care in acute settings
  • Communication skills: I communicate clearly and compassionately, both verbally and in writing, to support safe, person-centred care During my mental health placement, I contributed to handovers and documented changes in a patient’s mood, behaviour, and medication compliance in their clinical notes I also collaborated with the multidisciplinary team to adjust the care plan, ensuring the patient’s voice and concerns were acknowledged This experience strengthened my ability to convey critical information accurately while maintaining empathy and professionalism
