This role is teaching in the level 6 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing anaesthesia tasks associated with their task book on rotations, Clinical supervising the tasks and assessing them near the end of the week, ensuring that they are competent.

If required, also providing re-teaching and with assessment the following day

• Creating/planning a simulation case scenario for their teaching and assessments.
• Assessing and providing feedback for the students.

This role is teaching in the level 6 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing all anaesthesia related topics, not limited to physiology related to anaesthesia, Pre-anaesthetic assessment, premedication, induction, maintenance agents, machines, breathing systems, airway management and Recovery

• Creating exams and assessments following moderation policies
• Providing feedback to students when necessary
• Creating workbooks and practical laboratory around anaesthesia related material

This role was teaching current and new nursing staff both at the Feilding and Awapuni clinics by providing knowledge of how to improve ways to better perform anaesthesia, supplying information/advice on equipment purchasing for anaesthesia, updating existing and creating new protocols/drugs, CRI and provide cheat sheets for quick efficient techniques and set ups

• Assisted with anaesthetic procedures when short staffed.

This role contains teaching students’ surgical skills within the associated vet clinic called: Totally Vets Limited in Feilding.

• Competency supervision on surgery cases with selected tasks, level 6 surgical lectures, creating the surgical exam and marking of the students within the veterinary nursing program.

This role incorporated clinical anaesthesia and critical care work, as well as teaching into the BVT and BVSc degrees through clinical rotations and lab sessions. I was able to develop my teaching skills within a high stress clinical environment and received many comments affirming my calm and positive teaching style

• Taught and mentored BVT and BVSc students during clinical anaesthesia rotations, from patient workups right through the anaesthetic period to anaesthetic recovery and handover to ICU.

• Taught into BVSc practical laboratory sessions including dog and sheep live anaesthesia practical’s and sheep surgery labs.

• Taught into BVT laboratory sessions including simulated practical skills.

• Signed off competency tasks aligned with BVT course curriculum during anaesthesia clinical rotations.

• Advocated for BVT students to perform more clinical skills when on rotations.

• Taught a variety of anaesthetic monitoring equipment such as oscillometric blood pressure, Doppler, capnography, pulse oximeter, ECG, oesophagus stethoscope and thermometer.

• Taught clinical skills including but not limited to: Pre-anaesthetic examinations, anaesthetic considerations, drug protocol selection, drug calculations, premedication, preparing drugs and anaesthetic equipment, anaesthetic machine checks and maintenance, patient handling, drug administration, IV catheter placement, preparing fluid sets, fluid pumps and syringe drivers, fluid and CRI calculations, endotracheal intubation, anaesthetic machine and vaporiser use, inhalation agents, problem solving peri-anaesthetic issues, ventilator use, arterial line set-up, blood gas analysis, blood transfusions, analgesia, extubation, post-anaesthesia recovery, anaesthetic record keeping.

• Performed anaesthesia on a range of species including small animals, small mammals, equine, production animal, avian and wildlife patients.

• Anaesthetised animals for a range of procedures including soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, radiography, CT, ultrasound, endoscopy, dental, and

MRI.

• Ran a variety of critical and emergency cases, such as splenectomy, caesarean section, spinal, GDV, fractures and HBC trauma.

• Equine anaesthesia: foal, colic, septic joints, injectable and standing sedation.

• Performed advanced anaesthesia clinical techniques such as arterial catheter placement and direct blood pressure monitoring, local blocks and epidurals, and central line placement.

This role incorporated equine medical and surgical nursing, handling and husbandry, as well as teaching into the BVT and BVSc degrees through clinical rotations, lectures, and lab sessions. This was my first teaching role and I was able to develop teaching skills in both theoretical and practical settings.

• Taught BVT and BVSc students on equine clinical rotations and practical labs.

• Wrote BVT equine rotation assessments, assignments, and marking schedules to ensure assessment standards were maintained and aligned with course curriculum.

• Restructured the BVT final year equine tracking roster, core competency tasks, tutorials, assessments, online quizzes and exam questions.

• Delivered lectures into the BVT program including equine care, physical examination of the horse, advanced clinical foal and colic lectures.

• Developed professional tutorial videos for BVT and BVSc equine clinical skills such as IV catheter placement, blood collection and IM/IV injections.

• Developed learning outcomes, lecture material, exam questions and marking schedules for associated lectures.

• Taught BVT practical labs on live equine physical examinations and field anaesthesia of the horse.

• Taught equine handling and husbandry duties including stall maintenance, nutrition and grooming of horses, handling procedures.

• Taught equine medical nursing duties such as fluid therapy, endoscopy, overground scope, nasogastric tubing, isolation care, blood sampling/diagnostics, urinalysis, bandaging, radiography.

• Performed advanced equine nursing including foal neonatal care, over the wire catheter placement, plasma transfusions, blood collection/separation/ storage for transfusions, IRAP therapy, and chemotherapy.

• Taught equine surgical nursing duties such as theatre setup, surgical attire, assisting induction, hoist and table positioning, surgical site preparation, urinary catheter placement, sterile technique and theatre nursing.

• Injectable equine anaesthesia for short procedures such as wound debridement, castrates and standing sedation.

• Preparing submissions for major equipment rounds to obtain anaesthetic monitoring equipment and arthroscopy stack for the equine department.

• Maintenance and re-writing of policies and procedures.

• Participated in nurses after hours roster covering small animal surgery, surgical preparation, theatre nursing, theatre breakdown and instrument sterilization.
