I'm an enthusiastic kaiako with a passion for working with ākonga facing learning and behaviour challenges, especially those dealing with trauma. I thrive on helping them develop not just academically, but socially too. I believe in the power of relationships and aim to create a safe, supportive space where every ākonga feels seen and heard. With my strength for reflection and understanding, along with my skill for communicating and empathy, I'm excited to make a real difference in ākonga's lives and help them grow into confident, resilient individuals.
During my tenure as an RTLB, I embraced the role of whaikōrero, where I regularly engaged in public speaking in Te Reo Māori. This included leading or participating in traditional ceremonies such as karakia, pōwhiri, and opening and closing hui. Through these experiences, I have cultivated proficiency in speaking Te Reo Māori, developing skills in articulation, pronunciation, and cultural expression. My commitment to honouring and preserving the Māori language and customs has enriched my communication abilities and deepened my cultural understanding, enhancing my effectiveness in fostering inclusive and culturally responsive environments within educational settings.
As a kaiako, I learned to teach using a whole word approach, which emphasises recognising words as complete units rather than individual sounds. However, my RTLB training provided me with expertise in structured literacy, a method that breaks down language skills into sequential steps. These dual approaches have enriched my teaching practice, enabling me to cater to diverse learning styles and effectively support ākonga in their literacy development within the framework of the New Zealand Curriculum.
As a kaiako, I have experience teaching numeracy and I am familiar with educational tools such as Numicon, although I have not directly utilised it in my teaching practice. However, my understanding of Numicon, coupled with my knowledge of current best practices in numeracy education, has contributed to my ability to provide effective instruction and support in mathematical concepts.
I am very collaborative communicator, emphasising open dialogue, active listening, and mutual respect. I seek positive solutions and am adept at building positive relationships through effective communication and problem-solving. I foster an inclusive environment conducive to teamwork and cooperation.
