Work History

Building Inspector

Porirua City Council
01.2020 - Current

As a Building Assurance Officer my main role is to ensure that the scope of work is being constructed is as per the approved Building Consent documentation, I also evaluate the structural integrity and durability of buildings during inspections to ensure the minimum requirements of the NZ Building Code have been achieved.

As part of my role I issue Code Compliance Certificates for construction projects after verifying that the requested documentation meet all applicable requirements.


My role as a Territorial Authority (TA) I will issue Notice to Fix (Form 13) when required for contraventions of the Building Act 2004.

As a TA I carry out BWOF Audits and Swimming Pool inspections.

I participate in continuing education courses to stay current on industry trends, codes, and best practices.

Carpentry tutor

Whitireia Polytechnic
01.2015 - Current

As a tutor at Whitireia Polytechnic tutoring level 3 carpentry, there were no resources available. I lead the initiative of developing new resources required to cover the learning outcomes required for the level 3 programme.

Completing 501 and 502 credits in the Level 5 adult teaching and learning programme I developed a wide range of cultural teaching strategies acknowledging a wide range of cultural values and needs.


Tutor/ Assistant tutor

As an assistant tutor I relived for other carpentry tutors, supporting the students with their additional learning needs.

I also worked as a part time tutor at the same time from February 2015 until July 2015 tutoring the Wellington trades academy in carpentry.

I Provided one-on-one tutoring sessions, tailoring content to meet the specific needs of each student while promoting independent learning skills.

Collaborating with fellow tutors to develop effective strategies for addressing diverse student needs and abilities.

Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of educational best practices and incorporated them into teaching methods.


Self Employed Carpenter

As a qualified carpenter I established my own business managing a range of high end residential projects, mainly sub-contracting for a high end construction company in Wellington.

I would manage day to day jobbing with allocated staff and sub-contractors, ensuring the building work was constructed as detailed within the approved building consent and the requirements of the NZ Building Code.

I would lease with clients when required and communicate with the construction firm with any correspondence required.

I would keep up with new carpentry techniques and materials as the industry changed over this time frame.

I followed Health and Safety requirements and job site safety regulations and maintained safe and clean work areas for all parties involved.

As self employed, I achieved a high level of client satisfaction and provided customized solutions for unique carpentry challenges.

Pre Purchase Building Inspector

As a Pre purchase building inspector I carried out inspections in the Wider Wellington Region, on average completing 4 property inspections each day.

Pre Property inspections were completed via dictaphone and then electronically transferred to staff who typed these into a report for clients.

Accuracy and communication were essential both internally and externally to achieve a high end pre purchase building report.

Good communication was essential with the clients and internal staff to ensure that correct information was translated and interpreted.

Part of the role would involve inspecting new builds and assessing weathertightness issues to ensure all NZ Building Code requirements had been meet during the process of construction or remedial work.


Carpenter/ Site foreman

Contracting to a small number of carpenters as a foreman where my responsibilities were looking after large complex residential renovations and new builds.

I was responsible for the majority of the client communication regarding the work being taken out and liaising with all of the other sub trades on site ensuring the job went to time and budget.

I Specialized in specific carpentry tasks such as framing, finish work, or restoration projects to provide clients with tailored services and high-quality results.

I ensured I kept up with professional knowledge by staying current on industry developments, new materials, and innovative carpentry techniques.

I would look at developing strong relationships with suppliers to secure competitive pricing on materials and helping manage project costs effectively.

Initially employed as a Carpenter and then promoted to Foreman after one year of working for Kenzo Construction.

I was responsible for ensuring jobs ran to agreed timelines, budget and constructed to the current building code requirements.

I was responsible for a small team of staff in various carpentry roles that carried out day to day tasks.

Taking on the role as a Foreman I developed the skills to inspect job sites, identifying potential hazards and establishing protection with safety standards.

I learnt to strengthen team collaboration through effective communication and problem-solving during complex carpentry projects.

With this opportunity as a Foreman my career grew gaining industry knowledge which has lead me to the position i am at today as a building assurance officer.
