Prime Minister's Scholarship Award

As part of a small collective of Māori researchers from the Tairāwhiti (East Coast) region of Aotearoa NZ, we were fortunate enough to receive a Prime Minister's Scholarship to support our application to visit Indigenous communities in Chile and Rapa Nui in May-April 2026. The visit will focus on an Indigenous exchange on how economic and environmental disruptions affect the intergenerational transmission of Indigenous language, culture, and traditional knowledge.

I supported the delivery of a funding contract between our marae and Te Mātāwai (Māori language entity) to nurture and normalise our reo amongst whānau (families), hapū (sub-tribe) and iwi (tribe). Under this contract, we held a weekend-long reo wānanga (Māori language gathering) for uri (descendants) of Rongo-i-te-Kai Marae in Ruatorea in 2023, led weekly mōteatea/waiata (traditional chants/songs) classes and developed a digital resource for whānau to access resources dedicated to our area.
