To assess, record and analyse the achievement of students. To strategically administer and manage resources. To strategically lead and manage staff. To create and maintain partnerships. To be an effective team member. To lead and manage quality. To ensure that the “Kotahitanga” principles are valued within the department and aim towards implementing the “Ka Hikitia” strategy to ensure that Maori students enjoy education success as Maori.

This position entailed providing a service for students with personal, social and academic problems and encouraging them to find solutions to their problems. To encourage students to achieve their academic potential. To assist and explore career choice pathways with individual students. To oversee attendance and ensure it is being followed-up. To act in a disciplinary capacity when necessary. To oversee and keep records of a particular group in the school. To ensure that Māori students have access to guidance in tikanga (customary) and taha wairua (spiritual). The Dean’s position is to ensure that all tasks and performance indicators were adhered too.

This was my first role in the education system. This role enabled me to confirm that I was interested in a career path in the Education sector and enabled me to utilize my skills and to provide a service with at-risk students who needed support network groups to motivate them towards developing skills. This role involved implementing reading, maths and science programmes into the school and to involve community volunteers to become leaders of such programmes and to be part of the school life.
