This has been a very enjoyable and valuable experience, as I developed strong trusting relationships with lifestylers and team members across the whole trust. I gained valuable understanding of the daily operations, taking any opportunity to attend available training.

Including:

• BILD Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners Programme, this programme covers the essential knowledge needed by anyone who provides direct support to people whose behaviour can challenge. It builds a basic understanding of the values base and practice of Positive Behaviour Support.
• CPI Safety Intervention™ Foundation training, formerly known as MAPA®, is for those who need to prevent and/or intervene in crisis situations. The programme focuses on prevention and teaches staff de-escalation skills as well as non-restrictive and restrictive interventions.

My role includes:

• Building effective relationships.
• Providing leadership and developing team goals and objectives for the site staff.
• Maintaining professional boundaries.
• Provide guidance in positive behavior management.
• Prevent and manage escalations.
• Maintaining positive working relationship with fellow staff and management.
• Identify needs of Lifestylers and staff promptly and efficiently.
• Developing and supporting effective relationships and communication with whanau.
• Ensuring procedures and policies are followed, including daily note keeping, exception reports, and health and safety standards.

In my late teens I worked in aged care as I considered a career in nurusing at the time. I worked at The Booms Lodge for six months then moved to Hamilton and worked as a Nurse Aid for Panacea, a Nursing Agency
