Work History

Floor Sander

Harbour Floor Sanders
Takapuna, Auckland
04.2021 - 12.2024
  • I used specialized power tools to remove old polyurethane and any surface adhesives from old (mostly residential) hardwood floors.
  • I sanded the floors to a level suitable for a new application of the customer's choice of polyurethane, oil or paint.
  • I also conveyed any problems there was with the floor to my my employer and together with the client came up with solutions so that the end product met the customer's expectations.
  • At times some of the flooring needed old boards removed and new floorboards installed. This I also did using power tools, hand tools, glue and nails etc. All boards were measured, cut and installed to a very high standard of construction.
  • Some jobs required a stain to be applied to the timber before the polyurethane was applied. This was achieved using rags to the edges of the floor and a floor discer with a specialized pad to apply the stain.
  • At times a filtered breathing mask was used when applying oil based polyurethanes. Oil based polyurethanes have a very high toxic fume ratio. Gloves and knee pads were also used as safety precautions when applying oil based coats.

Timber Machinist

Claymark
Thames, Thames
07.2019 - 03.2021
  • I had several roles at Claymark Timber mill. Each role was a progression, the more experience I gathered.
  • The first role was to place packets of cut timber in its various sizes and thickness onto a chain drive to feed into the filleting and stacking plant so that the packets could then be placed into the kilns to dry. Often I would have to dock the ends of the packets with a chainsaw to ensure that the ends were square and that lengths of timber were suitable for the filleting machine.
  • I then moved on to the filleting machine and the stacker. After training I became one of the main filleters and stackers of the crew. These roles I learnt quickly and soon became very proficient. This led to an offer of filling a vacancy in the kiln department by management.
  • My role as a kiln operator involved placing packets of timber onto trolleys on rail tracks which were then pushed into the kilns to dry.
  • I had to set the cycle of the kilns and monitor the progress of the drying process via computer monitoring and manually going inside the kilns and taking moisture readings.
  • Once the timber was dried to the required moisture level, the packets were then removed from the kilns to eventually be taken to the next stage of the process which was to the defilleting and stacking machine which was run by another crew.
  • At times I was required to fill a stacking or filleting position or even another position which I wasn't very experienced at in order to help out management by filling a spot which was vacant by someone being sick.

Care Giver

Bupa
Tararu, Thames/Coromandel
04.2018 - 06.2019
  • I worked in the residential side of the Tararu rest home while my father was a resident there. I decided that it would be a good way of being able to spend time with him over his last days alive.
  • I gave cares to elderly residents on a day to day basis. Helping them shower, go to the toilet, dress themselves and groom themselves.
  • I assisted the residents to get to any appointments they may have had. And assisted them with getting to meals and in some cases helping them to eat or clean themselves etc.
  • I also gave psychological help in the form of listening to grievances, complaints and general malaise due to the unending tedium of being in a rest home.
  • I also became the assistant to the rest homes' physio therapist, which involved applying basic physio therapy to many residents to aide with mobility and flexibility issues which arise through the aging process.

Plaster Board Installer (Fixer)

Mooloo Plasterboards
Kopuarahi, Thames/Coromandel
01.2006 - 03.2018
  • I was part of (mostly) a two man team who installed Gib plasterboard into new build houses around the Thames/Coromandel and Auckland areas.
  • My duties involved measuring and cutting plasterboard and gluing / screwing to ceilings and walls to be complete and ready for plasterers to follow us and then painters etc.
  • I had to mark out and screw bracing elements into the Gib board to meet both the council structural requirements and to meet the architectural strengthening guidelines as per building plans.
  • Part of the job was to assist with the delivery and placement of the pellets of Gib board as they arrived at each site. This was achieved by using rollers underneath a stack of 6 meters or less pellets into the garage of each house. In some houses this wasn't possible so in some instances the Hiab operator lifted the pellets to a ranch slider upstairs and we would manually slide or lift the plasterboard sheet by sheet inside and either stack them on the floor or lean them against walls and then secure them with straps to comply with safety regulations.

Hammer Hand / Builder

07.2003 - 12.2005

  • Some of my duties were constructing and erecting timber framing and roof trusses.
  • Assisting in the process of pouring concrete floors and walls.
  • Attaching building paper and moisture barriers to windows and doors.
  • Making concrete nib walls to entrances and doorways.
  • Measuring and cutting aluminium cladding to exterior walls and ramparts.
  • Cutting and shaping polystyrene walls to curved deck extrusions for plasterers to follow.
