My name is Phoebe Williams, I am 22 years old and have grown up on a sheep and beef farm inland from Gisborne. Growing up on the farm has given me a love and appreciation for agriculture and has steered my in the direction of a career in this area. I choose to do the Animal science degree majoring in breeding and genetics because of passion for animals and also to gain a better understanding of the reason behind production systems in New Zealand. My immediate interest is definitely based around sheep and beef, with no strong preference between the two, and I am open and keen to learn about the deer industry as well. The career path I aim to pursue is a mix of on farm and genetic data based work that would help make a difference in the New Zealand production industry. I am a hard worker that wishes to gain practical skills and knowledge that will help me be the best I can be for my career path. I am keen to learn different ways of doing things and meet people who are passionate about their line of work.
I worked as a rousie for a crutching gang over the 2018/2019 summer.
I helped with an indoor lambing season as part of my gap year in 2020. This was a great opportunity to learn about different farming practices and meet new people.
During the rest of my gap year worked at my family farm as well as multiple farms in my district. I learnt that there was multiple different ways of doing jobs and gained experience communicating with lots of different people.
Different jobs I completed during this time included:
While studying I worked as front of house staff at Gengy's. During this time I learnt different skills such as:
I worked over the 2022/2023 summer for Hamish Brown on his multiple properties. During this time I was required to carry out different farm tasks such as:
I currently work for Ross one day a week. During this time work can be anything from drenching, dagging and vaccinating to fencing, planting trees and general maintenance. This job has allowed me to gain more experience with fencing and maintenance type jobs that I previously hadn't done much of.
I enjoy being on the farm with my animals, keeping fit at the gym, travelling to new places, riding horses, training dogs and being with friends and family.
