Clinical Placement History

  • 08/01/23, 10/01/23, Te Toka Tumai, Ward 63, Auckland, 10 weeks, I am currently on this placement, it is a general medical ward. So far I have been able to hone in on all of the skills from previous placements and exercise them in this placement. I have been able to take on a patient load of one to two patients in these first two weeks. I have been focused on understanding the pathophysiology of the conditions in this ward and assessing the patients accordingly.
  • 05/01/23, 06/01/23, Te Toka Tumai, Langmalie Health Centre, Auckland, 3 weeks, I enjoyed this community placement. I developed an understanding of the direct impacts of language barriers in the healthcare of patients and how it is so clearly impacts the delivery of quality healthcare. The mainly Tongan-speaking environment enabled me to demonstrate effective communication skills through building on my earlier placement using non-verbal as well as verbal communication. I learnt to triage, assess and document findings of patients before they went in to see the doctor, enhancing my nursing assessment and management skills.
  • 03/01/23, 04/01/23, Te Toka Tumai, Level 9 Women's Health, Auckland, 4 weeks, This was my first surgical placement and it was in the intra-operative setting. I demonstrated professional development by learning the various types of gynaecology surgeries. My role as a circulating two nurse refined my capabilities in documentation and patient advocacy. This placement also developed my team building skill, as I was working in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team everyday. After having experience the different nurse roles of theatre I had the opportunity to assist the surgeon in a minor surgery alongside my preceptor.
  • 11/01/22, 12/01/22, Te Toka Tumai, Community Mental Health, Auckland, 4 weeks, This placement enabled me to demonstrate and develop my ability in the application of holistic client care, taking into account their broader context and past experiences. I learnt the importance of active listening and validation in effective communication. I learned the skill of building therapeutic interpersonal relationships and witnessed how this bettered patient engagement with the healthcare provided because of trust built between client and professional.
  • 10/01/22, 11/01/22, Te Toka Tumai, Centrally Auckland Specialist School, Auckland, 3 weeks, In this placement I worked with new-entrant aged children who were all on the autism spectrum. I learnt and developed the use of different pathways of communication such as visual and musical communication as well as facial expressions and gestures. I was able to participate in and learn the importance of play-based learning and how to maintain autonomy for children who cannot verbally express what they want. In this way I was able to establish trusting interpersonal relationships with these children and communicate more effectively in a way that worked for them.
  • 05/01/22, 07/01/22, Te Toka Tumai, ward 26B Starship Hospital, Auckland, 5 weeks, Starship Hospital was my first placement and I was placed in a medical specialities ward. The fast paced environment and the complex comorbidities of the patients developed my skills of time management.
