Accomplishments

  • Te Kaha: Canterbury Multi Use Arena (CMUA), Client: Christchurch City Council, Overall budget NZD700 Millions: Structural engineer responsible for the design of Egress stairs for the arena located at four locations around the stadium in accordance with New Zealand Standards (NZS). The design was complex in nature due to geometric constrains and the constructability issues. The stairs included precast concrete walls in longitudinal and transverse directions with 100m2 curved slab simply supported at one end and overhanging on a tie beam. The geometry of the slab induced torsional forces in the stairs which were required to be transferred to shear wall with robust load path. Due to the elements being all precast in nature it was a challenging to establish and load path in longitudinal direction. This was successfully completed with the coordination with the architects, contractors, and peer reviewers. Design of vomitory stairs at multiple locations in the south, east and northeast stands of stadium in accordance with NZS. This was accomplished by using Vierendeel truss principles. Answering internal and external peer review queries for completion of the design. I am extensively involved in the construction monitoring of the arena including inspections for the foundation, concrete shear walls, structural steel and precast work. Reviewing shop drawings for precast concrete and structural steel elements and detecting clashes, coordinating the defects with the wider team in company and providing solutions to the clients. Coordinating with contractors, subcontractors, and the wider site team for any defects on site. Responsibilities also included producing Site Inspection Reports (SIR), Consultants Advisory Notes (CANS) and Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) from time to time as required. Managing the site workload for the team and arranging inspections was a part of my daily routine.
  • Whenuapai to Redhill Wastewater pipeline and Pipe bridges, Client: Watercare New Zealand, Overall budget NZD100 Million: I was extensively involved in the design of three gravity pipeline bridges spanning between 30m – 40m. The design involved considering multi-disciplinary involvement in the project and designing with civil engineers and geotechnical engineers. The concrete lined pipes were used as carrier pipes spanning between the concrete bored piles which were designed fore the end bearing actions supported on rock. The complex part of the project included designing for waterfowl forces as per AS5100:2017. The design was completed in the stipulated time and budget and was peer reviewed by the contractor's engineers.
  • Hundertwasser Art Museum: Foundation Design, Client: Whangarei District Council,Overall budget NZD 50 Million: I was the member of the design team responsible for the overall modelling of the foundation including 32m deep piles with bi-linear springs representing soil structure interaction at Cook Costello for this project. The complexity of the design was the weak and liquefiable soil present underneath the foundation. Based on the geotechnical inputs 32m deep pile foundation was decided to be a suitable option for this site. The soil structure interaction was signified by modelling the bi-linear spring models based on the geotechnical inputs about soil stiffness. A non-linear static pushover analysis was undertaken using SAP2000 to estimate the demands on the piles. Foundation beams were designed as per NZS3101:2006 and the steel encased concrete piles were designed using NZS5100.6:2017. The project was peer reviewed by Opus international (now WSP). My duties also involved liaising within the design team and with the peer review team as well as responding to the queries by the contractors during construction.
  • Seismic Assessment: 5-storey commercial building using SLaMA method, Client: Private owner, Design budget NZD 60,000: The project was about the seismic assessment of the 5-storey commercial building located in Whangarei CBD. My responsibilities included budgeting and costing of job, undertaking Initial Seismic Assessment (ISA) and Detailed Seismic Assessment (DSA) for this project. I was managing the budget part every week and setting the design team meeting as required. The detailed seismic assessment was completed using Simple Lateral Mechanism Analysis (SLaMA) method and diaphragm analysis was completed using grillage model as specified in the NZSEE guidelines. I was responsible for completing the detailed seismic analysis report for the project which was later reviewed by the senior engineers. The project was successfully completed within the allocated budget and time.
