  • I was a Critical Care flight medic with rescue helicopters for 26 years.
  • I was a volunteer rescue helicopter crewman for 15 years, which involved operating the winch over water and at night, and I was a rescue swimmer for the rescue helicopter, first learning to be a rescue swimmer at Piha Beach, Auckland, in 1982.

Accomplishments

  • In 1999 I was awarded the St John Life Saving Medal (bronze) for my part in the successful rescue of a family of five, swept out to sea off the foreshore at Napier, in treacherous sea conditions.
