I started off as a chaperone to girls aged 7-10 years old in the 2018/2019 season of marching. My role as a chaperone was to ensure the girls were ready for competition days, travelling with them to out of town competitions, mostly to Dunedin.
I started coaching Blue Jay U12 (Blue Jay U13 now) in 2020 and still am to this day. I started coaching to pass on my knowledge of marching to the younger generation and to keep the sport going, help keep the team numbers up. I have coached girls from age 7 to 13, coming from all different backgrounds, I am a mother, someone they look up to, counsellor, a shoulder to cry on, a friend as well as a coach.
I teach them discipline, concentration, help build their self esteem, confidence, a sense of accomplishment.
We get to travel around New Zealand and make friendships with other teams.
The best part of coaching is when the girls beat their goals, for an example we just had our south island championships, it was the best march I have seen them do and they made me cry a little, seeing them so happy and proud of what they have just put out on the field makes me feel extremely proud of what they have accomplished. Our goal was to not come last and they did exactly that, its another confidence booster that they need to continue striving to achieve higher at their next competition.
