Work History

Builder/Leading Hand

Tradeeaze Ltd
12.2022 - Current

In December 2022 I began contracting to Tradeeaze Ltd as a Builder working at the Farmers building located on Elizabeth Street in Tauranga CBD. While working as a builder in this commercial environment I performed activities but not limited to:

  • Cutting and installing steel framing in a manner that abides by the sites H&S regulations.
  • Installing RAB board with thermal break, constructing a cavity using CLD Batten and lining with James Hardie Easy Lap. Referring to manufacturers specifications to ensure proper installation and achieve fire rating elements.
  • Constructing and installing formwork, steel and pouring concrete nibs
  • Setting out Outdure aluminum decking systems, working off gridline's to ensure sky garden is setout correctly.

In May 2023, Tradeeaze Ltd's Leading Hand/Foreman who was managing the Tradeaze team resigned. This resulted in me moving from being in a senior builder position to taking over the role of Leading Hand. This new role meant I was now responsible for the onsite runnings of the team. My Tasks and duties in this position were :

  • Liaising with Hawkins senior site managers to gather information such as architectural, engineering details and work schedules for my team. Attending weekly meetings to report progress and set goals to ensure work schedule is on target.
  • Provide direction and guidance to workers so as to achieve set goals and maximise efficiency.
  • Mitigating potential risks associated with construction sites through proactive identification of hazards.
  • Planning ahead and working with suppliers so all materials and products were available to workers when needed.
  • Overseeing and participating in construction works that were carried out to maintain a high standard of works.
  • Maintained good relationships with main contractor throughout the duration of the project, keeping them informed on progress updates and addressing any concerns as needed.

While performing this Role of Leading hand our team conducted and executed certain tasks efficiently, delivering on schedules and maintaining a good standard. Tasks such as :

  • Setting out prefab steelwork off engineering drawings, framing and laying decking to accommodate the 25m swimming pool.
  • Setting out and installing Outdure decking systems throughout the entire sky garden area to support landscaping elements (Artificial Turf, Polystyrene Mounds, Structural Tiles, Vitex Decking and river stone pebbles)
  • Cutting and installing outdoor stairs
  • Constructing suspended formwork, required steelwork and pouring concrete to extend pile cap
  • Timber and steel cavity systems and installing exterior linings.

Builder

Self-Employed
8 2021 - 06.2022

After Leaving Federation Homes Ltd, I began contracting to a fellow contractor who I worked alongside at Federation Homes Ltd. His company Apera Builders Ltd started with remedial work on Tower 2 at the base of Mt Maunganui under iLine Construction.

  • This was predominately demolition, re-framing and fire-rated soffit work. In this application, working to designers specifications for each product was crucial to achieving fire-rated and engineering requirements.
  • A great attention to detail was taken when referring to plans/specifications to achieve these requirements.
  • Investigated and resolved construction problems with other trades (Gib Fixers, Concreting Crews etc)
  • Identified and eliminated safety risks through additional training.

After working here for 7 months we began new build contracts for GJ Gardener Homes early March 2022. This work included timber wall framing, roof framing, soffits, cavity construction, cladding and internal finishing trims. Some skills I developed during this time are as below.

  • Worked as apart of a small team to achieve council inspection deadlines and meet the needs of subcontractors.
  • Coordinated paperwork and inspections required for each type of building to keep workflows running smoothly and to avoid backlog.
  • Used personal expertise and craftsmanship to complete residential builds.

Builder

Federation Homes Ltd
01.2019 - 08.2021

While the work I have done with Federation ranges in style it has all been architectural new builds where we stand frames right through to fitting door handles and hanging vanities. From 70m² minor dwellings up to 2 story family homes, I have done some really nice builds with Federation, further honed my skills, my knowledge and completed my apprenticeship in just over 3 years in December 2020. I finished working for Federation Homes in August 2021.

During my time with Federation homes I completed a number of builds from standing frames right through to Gib linings and internal trims, interior doors and finalizing the builds with door hardware.

  • Standing Frames, Roof Framing, Bracing, Lintel types and hardware.
  • Cavity Construction (RAB/paper, penetrations & flashing external openings etc)
  • Joinery Install
  • Cladding (Timber & Fibre-cement WB, Sheet Material)
  • Gib Fixing, Internal Trims & Split Jam Door installation.
  • Finishing Hardware & Hanging Vanities
  • Collaborated with team members to achieve target results.
  • Used personal expertise and craftsmanship to complete residential and commercial renovations.
  • Investigated and resolved construction problems with diverse trades.
  • Used critical thinking to break down problems, evaluate solutions and make decisions.

Apprentice Carpenter

Manly Construction Ltd
02.2017 - 01.2019

After leaving A2D Contactor's Ltd I started working for Manly Contractors Ltd which was a career switch from predominantly Commercial work to the majority being residential new builds and renovations.

  • Since I've worked here I've done alot of different works from private jobs like prepping a house for removal and infilling the freestanding double garage, converting it to a 2 Bedroom dwelling.
  • I have expanded my understanding of building and developed many skills since working with this company, such as working around machinery and assisting in site cuts and post hole boring, interpreting plans and drawings to understand the task, using petrol powered concrete saws, building fences and decks, pile packs and pile braces, Understanding and using different types of steel e.g D16 500E and 300E.
  • Re-roofing a certain job helped me to understand about cantilevering, with the ridge beam cantilevering out over a deck, extra hardware and plywood brace was used to increase strength
  • Having completed a few new builds with the company I quickly learnt how to set out, stand, straighten, level and brace frames, trusses and a general understanding of wall and truss framing and hold downs using truss plans, installing wanz support bars and fitting off joinery, Sprocket and fly rafter framing for flat soffit, timber ceiling battens using droppers and straight-edge.
  • Installing Timber bevel back weatherboards with box corners, facings and scribers using silicone's and sealants to seal cladding. assisted in laying a number of different roofs both tin and iron, constructing an internal fiberglass gu er system where two roof rakes met on one of the jobs
  • Alterations to an existing 45 degree skillion pitch roof putting in one dormer on each rake, this included the demolition of the roof and framing out for windows, re purlin and re roof.
  • This same job has a garage going in out front tying in to the existing structure with a master bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite on the second story, one large dormer window facing easterly running into a 45 degree gable end
  • Where I helped with prepping, formwork, steelwork and pouring of slab and footings
  • Framing out midfloor infilling steel portals, framing second floor onsite. Ridge beam and general rafter roof framing.
  • Laying flooring
  • Detailing penetrations
  • Placing and fitting off of Joinery
  • Amongst many others these are just some examples of the many jobs and things I've carried out with this company

I found a Job with A2D Contractors Ltd and began working in January 2015 full time with a small but very limited knowledge of building

  • Over my two years with A2D Contractors Ltd I was working on commercial sites reinstating leaky/remedial townhouse or apartment complexes
  • This included demolition, re-framing and performing any necessary repairs to the structure whether it be fire-rating or waterproofing
  • Remedial work I took part in ranged from installing timber fascia and soffit, bending steel, tying cages, stirrups and mesh
  • Framing windows, walls, doors (Interior and Exterior) and inter level post connections.
  • Installing and understanding various types of stainless and galv fixings
  • Bracing, hold down products and hardware.
  • Installing Veneer Laminate LVL Hyspan Rafters at 8-16M lengths for an Apartment complex parapet Roof
  • I became familiar with the general framework and I learnt about and installed various James Hardie Products such as RAB Board (Rigid Air Barrier) and Linear Bevel Back cement weatherboards
  • I learned certain skills while working for this company such as using laser levels to shoot heights and set datum's and also using most power tools confidently.
  • Implementing the use of string and chalk lines to straighten and manipulate timber or material to a line, using techniques such as 3x4x5 to square up frames, using a PLS to transfer an external corner up to story above
  • I also developed an understanding for cavity systems, different flashings such as; Barge, apron, head flashing , back flash, drip edge and ridge cap, an understanding of different types of timbers and how to use most effectively depending of timber condition e.g bows, twists and curls
  • I also had to participate in various health and safety regimes and always taught to wear the appropriate PPE to help achieve a safe site and minimize the risk of an injury or death.
