Summary

I am a master’s student in Marine Science at the University of Otago with a passionate interest in coastal ecology, aquaculture, and applied fieldwork. My academic journey has grown from my early passion for the ocean and those that live within it, which over my university career has evolved into a focused commitment to understanding marine ecosystems, animal behaviour, and applied conservation, particularly in supporting sustainable fisheries and coastal communities. Through projects such as a pāua relocation initiative with a local marae, offshore research aboard the university's Polaris II research vessel, and my current thesis preparation, which examines how post-harvest handling strategies can mitigate heat stress and improve the resilience of Jasus edwardsii, I've gained extensive hands-on experience in both community driven conservation and experimental research. I bring strong skills in field coordination, scientific planning, and effective communication, and I'm dedicated to contributing research that benefits the ecological and economic wellbeing of our coastal environments.

Scholarship Relevance

Scholarship Relevance

Receiving this scholarship would be incredibly valuable in helping me carry out impactful applied marine research. It would significantly assist with university related expenses such as further diving certifications, research equipment, and travel costs to and from Portebello marine Labs. These resources would allow me to get fully involved in the hands on components of my thesis, which centres around developing practical strategies to enhance the resilience of Jasus edwardsii to environmental stressors associated with ocean warming. This support would give me the flexibility to take on opportunities that strengthen both the scientific rigour and real-world impact of my project, from industry engagement to hands-on data collection. My research directly supports the New Zealand Coastal Society’s goal of advancing knowledge and promoting effective coastal management practices that benefit both our marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
