Management Responsibilities

• Recruited Verity Hogan into team administrator role and acted as her manager at Bruce Northey's request
• Ran the day to day delegation of work and mentoring responsibilities of Hayley Botha
• Run the day to day delegation of work and mentoring/development responsibilities of Kellie Newman. Arranged her maternity leave, her recent pay increase and reclassification.
• Acted as Hayley and Kellie's key contact person for any questions and concerns
• Arranged and managed the secondment of Michael Finucane (Claro), Hayley Botha (Meredith Connell) and Hershla Ifwersen (Meredith Connell)
• Currently delegating work to and supervising Hershla Ifwersen and Hayley Botha as secondees
• Currently running the recruitment for a legal secretary and commenced the recruitment for a commercial lawyer
• Lead team meetings at Bruce Northey's request
• Assist Bruce to manage an HR complaint in the team
• Conduct exit interviews of Verity, Michael and Portia when they stopped their employment/secondments in the team

National Leadership

• Organised a Coroners Conference (attended by many of our then Coroners) in 2018?? for the national legal team
• Organised a legal conference for the national legal team in 2019, 2020???, 2022 and 2023
• Organised for the national legal team to do Te Reo Maori lessons 2023

• Client contact and portfolio holder for Accident Compensation Corporation and Ministry of Health and delegation and mentoring responsibilities in relation to the civil and criminal workflows from these clients
• Opinion writing including a significant opinion for the Police on a manslaughter case
• Lead counsel on several complex Medicines Act prosecutions and appeals
• Further criminal prosecution work including trial and pretrial hearings

• Working with a team of 3 (including Una Jagose (now Solicitor-General) and Morag McDowell (now Health and Disability Commissioner)) on the investigation (including the briefing of numerous elderly former staff of the institutions on highly sensitive matters, assisting in formulating the strategic approach to the claims, and defence of over 200 claims brought by former psychiatric patients against the Attorney General for medical, sexual and violent abuse in psychiatric institutions in the 1960s and 1970s.

• Prosecuted serious indictable crime in the District and High Courts at Auckland as sole and lead counsel, including murder trials, trials for serious sexual and other violent offences, kidnapping, drug manufacture, importation, sale and supply, offending against the Resource Management Act and criminal neglect. The majority of the trials involved multiple defendants and multiple charges.
• Prosecuted numerous pre-trial hearings, bail hearings, sentencings, appeals, criminal trial callovers and extended supervision orders in the High and District Courts as sole and lead counsel.
• Drafting all forms of documentation relevant to the criminal trial jurisdiction and the summary jurisdiction in relation to prosecutions for the Ministry of Health, Commerce Commission, Ministry of Fisheries, Department of Internal Affairs and for regional authorities such as the Auckland City Council and Waitakere District Council.
• Opinion writing;
• Mentoring juniors in criminal matters.

• Prosecuted in excess of 10 District Court trials as sole counsel and in excess of 30 High and District Court trials as junior counsel
• Drafting and appearing on all sentencings following guilty plea and any sentencings arising from trials I prosecuted or juniored on
• Lead counsel on Oranga Tamariki (then Child, Youth and Family) hearings, Accident Compensation Corporation hearings, Ministry of Social Development hearings, Ministry of Primary Industries hearings
• Drafting summary and indictable prosecution documentation
• Involved in advising the Police on significant criminal investigations such as the investigation into Mark Lundy for the murder of his wife and daughter in August 2000

• General junioring responsibilities in litigation and commercial teams, including research, opinion drafting, discovery, minor court appearances in the High and District Court
• Junior on a High Court Testamentary Promises Act case
