Summary

On a professional level, I have been in the teaching fraternity for more than 15 years, mostly spent with upper primary classes. Making a positive impact with my students and my school community is pivotal in my personal and professional journey. I take pride in sharing my passion for learning with students and demonstrate this by being an exemplary learner myself. Helping students develop, learn, and have a positive influence on their peers is also an important task as an educator. It is important that from facilitating peer teaching and assessment with my students in class, they will equip themselves with self-reflection strategies and improve as learners. “Students teaching students” would be a model that guides students with ownership of their own learning as well as providing interaction that enhances learning. My ambition as a teacher is to inspire individual intelligence and growth in my students. I believe that students need to be consistently curious about the world and how it evolves around them. I also believe in equipping myself with the dynamics of teaching strategies that will allow me to provide and develop my students with the 21st century skills. My passion is to provide my students with the skills they need to be critical and creative thinkers and persevere in this ever-changing world.

  • Rural experience was very challenging but made me adaptable to my calling as an educator and to the needs of the community from which my students belonged. It was a 3km walk to the school which was located further inland from the main road. The rich experience had enabled me to be flexible and committed to my students’ needs. There were many occasions of cross-cultural learning between my students and I. Many of the students were from farming backgrounds of Indo-Fijian ethnicity. English was indeed a challenge for them and their parents who were mostly humble farmers. I was enriched in their cultural background and challenged myself to learn the Hindi language to improve communication with the parents of the students I taught. Because the school was small in size and roll, some sense of 'quality learning' took place. This was proven in the annual national exam results. Despite the challenges, the parents worked hard for their children. The students and their parents valued the teachers that taught at this school. It was a fruitful experience, to say the least.
