Tauranga Hospital DHB
03.2023 - 04.2023

A highlight for me was being able to try many various environments of the different clinics in main OPD such as ENT, gynecology, surgical, and dermatology. Then the following weeks included paediatric and orthopaedic experience. I loved being able to work with children and learn their normal vital signs range based on age and further in-depth knowledge regarding cystic fibrosis. I particularly enjoyed having the autonomy to clean wounds as well as remove casts and sutures in orthopaedic OPD. Each area had its unique learnings and experiences and I enjoyed every minute of it. I especially enjoyed the valuable team dynamic and the support I received in each department.

  • Transported patients between rooms and appointments or testing locations.
  • Reduced risks of patient infection and cross-contamination by cleaning and sterilizing equipment.

Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP)

use a holistic approach to my nursing care. I particularly enjoyed participating in the memory clinic sector being present to witness a client being diagnosed with Alzhimer’s disease and the impact it has on the individual and their whānau. Another highlight included educating myself about and administering Intramuscular injections. I feel extremely lucky that I was able to work with such a unique and supportive community multidisciplinary team. It was a pleasure being able to build a rapport with clients and being able to educate them of their psychiatric medications and their mental health conditions.

I gained knowledge about the function of community nursing in promoting elderly people's mental health. I administered cognitive tests to dementia patients and created nursing notes for them. When I visited patients in the community, I conducted thorough mental state examinations with them, which helped me improve my written communication skills.

  • Educated patients and families on disease processes, medications and treatments.
  • using my theoretical knowledge and being able to put it to practice in the clinical setting. A highlight for me is being able to collate pathophysiology and pharmacology knowledge and be able to see how it affects my own designated patients and the interventions I can provide for the best outcomes for my patients.
  • had three to four designated patients near the end of my time on the ward, however, I not only knew the patients pathophysiology, but their overall health holistically. I can now happily say I am thinking more critically and using clinical reasoning rather than being task oriented in regards to patient care. Working on this ward has helped me understand the qualities of what it is to be the best nurse I can be for my patient including solidifying a rapport, the importance of each role in the multidisciplinary team, how to deal with crisis situations, and continuity of care.
  • Through this experience, I learned how to provide post-stroke patient care as well as several basic nursing interventions such medication administration, catheter insertion, neurological examinations, and mobility.
