Working as a Prison Registered Nurse gave me significant experience and improved my decision-making abilities. I worked as part of a team to help the Department of Corrections achieve its goals and vision. I am the lead authorised adult vaccinator, and I was able to administer needed vaccines to the tanes under our care. I assisted the team in obtaining Cornerstone accreditation by giving health education, analyzing performance, and participating in several health audits.
In my capacity as the Acting Health Team Leader, I was able to mentor and advise new team members and provide examples of how to follow the Prison Health Operating Manual and its regulations. I was able to collaborate with outside medical professionals to enhance our patients' health outcomes. In order to confirm adherence to the Health Care Pathway requirements, I conducted thorough emergency process audits. I was also able to discuss any areas that needed improvement with the team.
I Conducted ongoing monitoring and evaluations of behaviors and conditions, and updated clinical supervisors with current information.
I was able to led team in driving successful patient outcomes by prioritizing standard of care and best practices.
Since most of the prisoners at Alice Springs Correctional Facility are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, my employment as a registered nurse has given me a unique perspective on nursing. The health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia are the worst of any group, especially for those who are incarcerated. It was an amazing experience to be a part of the government's effort to close the gap in granting fair and affordable access to healthcare.
I learned how to respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural rights, beliefs, and values and incorporate them into healthcare delivery to improve accessibility and safety.
I took part in trauma-informed primary health care initiatives that addressed poor health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through chronic illness, disease prevention, and health promotion, as well as evidence-based practice project implementation, nursing competency development, and nursing simulation activities.
As a registered nurse at Christ Hospital, Selwyn Foundation, I work in both hospital-level care and a rest home. I have nursing experience in gerontology and dementia wards.
During my time at the Selwyn Foundation, I learned a great deal about the New Zealand health care system. During this time, I learned about the legal laws governing nursing in New Zealand. I learned about the complications of delivering nursing care with modern technology. I learn about various models of care. I was also taught about nursing in accordance with current best practices, nursing within the scope of practice, public safety, and the patient/consumer bill of rights.
I learned the following while working at Selwyn Foundation: deliver skilled, fast, and level-headed emergency response to critically ill patients. To keep patient charts up to date, details about therapy were documented.
I worked as a staff nurse and was lucky to be rotated between different hospital departments every six months. I was tasked with working in the wards, outpatient department, obstetrics, orthopedic, emergency, and intensive care units (ICU), as well as the neonatal care unit. Gaining extensive experience along the way.
I learnt how to nurse in high-pressure environments and provide trauma and emergency interventions for significant brain injuries, gunshot wounds, and thoracic trauma.
