  • Was appointed as the South Island representative to this national group Te Pou to participate in the formation of the strategic documents that birthed the Pacific mental health service called LeVa
  • Today LeVa is a successful Pacific mental health provider that focuses on mental health, public health, leadership training and cultural competencies.

  • Pacific Smoking Steering Group – Pacific Heartbeat
  • Appointed to this steering group as the South Island representative to formulate the strategic documents that would steer and guide the new smoking cessation service – Tala Pasifika
  • As the sole voice of the Pacific communities in the South Island, it is crucial that I provide a strong voice to inform the group of where we are as a community
  • In the South Island, we are a smaller Pacific population and more than often, can be forgotten by our national counterparts
  • Today Tala Pasifika is a national service that provides Pacific peoples with a mechanism to provide input and advice into policy development processes.

  • Our Senibua group looks at Pacific health within the Canterbury area and raising awareness internally
  • Pacific Cultural Awareness Workshop for health staff in Christchurch
  • Led with one other the planning and design of a Pacific cultural awareness workshop for health professionals in Christchurch
  • Pacific Recovery Strategic Plan Christchurch, Coordinated and drafted the Health section of the Pacific Recovery Strategic Plan and an instrumental member of the working group that drafted and developed the whole Plan
  • After the Christchurch earthquakes in 2010, there was a need to bring together agencies and organizations to collaborate so that the needs of our Pacific communities could be identified and catered for
  • A huge gap that has been identified from our Plan is the need for more services tailored to our Pacific youth
  • I am currently working on raising this issue with government and non-government agencies.

  • Liaising with Pacific networks to educate and provide awareness on Pacific health issues
  • I am constantly being called upon for advice by non-Pacific peoples on how to engage with Pacific communities

  • Two months ago, I was part of a collective that organized a Careers Expo in which I coordinated the Health village
  • The Health village included different health career paths that students were able to participate and get a feel for the career
  • For example, students learning how to take blood pressure with a nurse supervising
  • The village provided hands on environment where they could participate rather than just collecting information
  • Use every opportunity that our Pacific communities provide to promote good health
  • For example, I organized a health stall at the annual League game between Maori and Pacific Premiers where there were around two thousand Maori and Pacific people walking through the stall.

  • As the sole voice of the Pacific communities in the South Island, I strongly highlighted the need for the group to recognize the differences of the regions and to use that as a platform to build up solutions working closely with the communities

  • Provided oversight of this group and was instrumental in drafting the logic framework for the Smoking Cessation Service that is being implemented now by the biggest Pacific provider in the South Island – Pacific Trust Canterbury
  • Healthy Eating Health Action (HEHA) Mentoring programme
  • Solely developed the HEHA Mentoring programme for the Canterbury District Health Board
  • This was in relation to the District Health Board’s lack of knowledge on Pacific communities
  • I included compulsory governance training, project management, nutrition training and report writing for the community groups which included churches to undertake as part of their funding contracts
  • Currently, HEHA funding has ceased, however, there are community groups that are still running activities.
